Nash Square Gets Major Refresh | Durham News

Nash Square is getting a major makeover to become safer, more inviting, and pedestrian-friendly—just in time for the new municipal building next door. Plans include opening up corners, widening walkways, adding more seating, and even reclaiming street parking to prioritize foot traffic. Historic oak and willow trees will be preserved as the park’s signature feature, while the Fallen Firefighters Memorial may see its wall removed to expand space and shade. Tree canopies could also be raised to boost visibility and deter crime. Final costs are still being worked out, with updates expected for council early next year—and the new building should be ready by spring 2027.
