Nasreen's Story

Nasreen from Tottenham wanted to become a teacher in one of London's most deprived areas. At 27, she had the qualifications and passion to make a difference in education. But when she looked into teacher training, she discovered that HM Treasury had reduced bursaries for subjects with critical shortages specifically in London. The Department for Education set national recruitment targets that ignore regional disparities, treating teacher training as though the government must compete for a fixed pot of money rather than creating the currency itself. The classrooms were ready, graduates wanted to teach, but Westminster chose not to connect them. This is her story of how central government spending rules blocked her path into education.
