In September 2016, at the age of 23, he was elected to serve as a legislator for Hong Kong Island, making him the youngest lawmaker in the history of the legislative council of Hong Kong. Following the enactment of the controversial National Security Law in 2020, he moved to London where he was granted political asylum, after Hong Kong police ordered his arrest.
