February 14, 2013. Peoria, Illinois. When Nathan Leuthold returned home on Valentine’s Day, he claimed he found the house ransacked, a door broken, and his 39-year-old wife, Denise, dead inside. She had been shot once in the head, and at first glance, the scene appeared to be a burglary that had ended in murder. But investigators quickly noticed that something did not add up. Valuable electronics had been left behind. Nathan’s behavior and movements raised questions, and evidence suggested the break-in had been staged to conceal a carefully planned execution. Prosecutors argued that Nathan had driven to a nearby park, secretly returned to the house, waited for Denise, killed her, and then manipulated the scene before establishing an alibi. At the center of the prosecution’s case was Nathan’s close relationship with Aina Dobilaite, a young Lithuanian student whom Nathan and Denise had helped bring to the United States.
