Nathan's Story
from Blocked Britain · host Blocked Britain
Nathan is 24 and wanted to teach in Stoke-on-Trent North, one of the most deprived areas in England. The classrooms needed him. Local schools were crying out for teachers. Nathan had the qualifications and the passion. But HM Treasury's spending rules forced the Department for Education to slash teacher training bursaries for subjects with critical shortages across the West Midlands. The department set national recruitment targets that deliberately ignore regional disparities, treating teacher training like a fixed pot that must be rationed rather than a public good that serves communities. Nathan's story exposes how Westminster's political choices block people from the work their communities desperately need. This episode contains discussion of education policy and regional inequality.
