National Spinning Event Raises Funds for Rare Mitochondrial Disease Community
from The Morning Brew with Andrew Schultz · host Corus Radio
As one of only roughly 200 people worldwide with Mitochondrial Neurogastrointestinal Encephalopathy (MNGIE) disease, Hazel Currie refuses to let it slow her down. She was diagnosed in June 2022 with the only known MNGIE case ever in the province of BC -- a condition that affects several parts of the body, particularly the digestive system and nervous system. Classified as a Mitochondrial Disease (MD), MNGIE can appear anytime from infancy to adulthood, but signs and symptoms most often begin by age 20. The medical problems associated with this disorder worsen with time. On Mornings with Sue and Andy, we talked with Hazel, the 50-year-old hiker and triathlete.
