And on Today’s episode of The World In My Eyes, oh my goodness heathens… I’m so very sorry that I’ve been MIA. From illness to work to illness again, and work, I’ve been unable to do a show for a very long time. But, I’ve finally been released by the doctor and I’m going to do my very best to do more episodes for you; and in a poor attempt to make it up to you, I’m going to start with one of my favorite types of episodes to do – a holiday episode. That’s right, it’s that time of the year when we’re all Irish, no matter where we’re from. But do you know what St. Patrick’s day is for? I’m betting not.. but don’t panic… Naughty Nicole is here to help! What began as a religious feast day in the 17th century has evolved into a variety of festivals across the globe celebrating Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, and a whole helluva lot of green. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17, to commemorate the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast–on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage. St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity’s most widely known figures. But for all of his prevalence in culture, namely the holiday held on the day of his death that bears his name, his life remains somewhat of a mystery. Many of the stories traditionally associated with St. Patrick, including the famous account of his banishing all the snakes from Ireland, are false, the products of hundreds of years of exaggerated storytelling.
