Navy vs Ranchers Over Land and Legacy | Las Vegas News

Nevada ranchers are locked in a fierce battle with the Navy over land expansion, as the military seeks to grow its training grounds at the expense of generations-old grazing operations. Facing compensation offers they say barely cover their losses, families like the Snows risk losing their livelihoods — land that’s not just property, but heritage. The conflict stems from a 2022 defense bill that greenlit the expansion, leaving the definition of “fair compensation” dangerously vague. Ranchers argue the Navy’s valuation ignores the true economic and cultural value of their land, while the Navy insists it follows established industry standards. Now, Senator Jacky Rosen is pushing for a congressional amendment to future defense bills, aiming to ensure ranchers are truly made whole — forcing the Navy to rethink its offers and potentially reshaping how America values rural legacy.
