Nearby Workers Save Man's Life After Accident

from IEN Radio · host Eric Sorensen

Last week, a 28-year-old man was working at US Food Corp in Hicksville, NY, when his right arm became entangled in a piece of machinery and was severed.According to local authorities, his arm was amputated below the elbow. The man ran to Energy Mechanical Corp., the business next door, where employees used a belt as a tourniquet to help control and stop the bleeding. According to a local report, the victim reportedly lost his arm in a machine used to make dough at US Food. He then ran into the neighboring business looking for help. When he entered the business the victim was still lucid enough that he was on his phone trying to call his supervisor. The employees at Energy Mechanical not only stopped the bleeding, but they believe that they saved the man’s life. Emergency personnel arrived in about 10 minutes, replaced the tourniquet and took the man and the arm to the hospital with hopes that it could be reattached. OSHA is investigating the incident. As of press time, there has been no update on the worker's condition or whether or not the arm was saved. US Foods is a distributor and supplier with around 250,000 customers nationwide, including restaurants and hospitals. With headquarters in Rosemont, IL, the company employs around 25,000 in the U.S.
