He didn't choose exile. He didn't choose Babylon. He didn't choose the culture surrounding him or the kings he would serve.Yet Daniel had settled something within himself. He had “purposed in his heart.”Daniel couldn't control Babylon—but Babylon didn't have to control Daniel.As the lives of these two men collide, we discover one of the great dividing lines between pride and wisdom:Pride needs to be the source. Wisdom is comfortable being the steward.Nebuchadnezzar's accomplishments gradually led him from stewardship into ownership, entitlement, self-deception, and finally isolation. Eventually his pride damaged his ability to perceive reality—including the reality about himself.Daniel chose another road.He could receive wisdom without needing to own it. He could acknowledge God as its source. He could listen, serve, remain teachable, and faithfully steward what had been entrusted to him.Eventually Nebuchadnezzar would be brought to the end of himself.
