Great need can harden the heart or provoke hasty action. When Nehemiah hears that Jerusalem’s walls remain broken, he mourns, fasts and takes the city’s danger and poverty to God in prayer. Knowing God’s holiness leads him to confess his own sin, while knowing God’s faithful love gives him courage to ask for mercy.
