Neighbor steps in to help Vietnam veteran Jim Chaconas

What started as a simple morning walk for a retiree with his dog on the morning of Dec. 1, 2025, became a 37-hour battle of fighting for his life. Jim Chaconas, a 78-year-old Floresville man, says he owes his life to the helpfulness of a friend and neighbor. Chaconas is a Vietnam veteran, who served in the U.S. Army. He also was a policeman in Baltimore, Md., for 32 years before he retired and he and his wife moved to Texas to be closer to her family.
