NEJM January 28,2026 Antithrombotic Therapy after Successful Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation
from This Week In Medicine · host A.I.O.
This clinical study investigates whether patients who have undergone a successful catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation still require powerful anticoagulants to prevent future neurological complications. By comparing the efficacy of rivaroxaban against daily aspirin over a three-year period, researchers measured the occurrence of both clinical strokes and "silent" brain damage visible only on imaging. The trial ultimately concluded that using a specialized blood thinner provided no significant clinical advantageover aspirin in reducing the combined risk of stroke or systemic embolism. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the choice of medication did not meaningfully alter the rate of major bleeding events or minor cerebral infarcts among the participants.
