昔、江戸の浅草に貧乏な野菜売りの男が、年老いた父親とおかみさんと三人で暮らしていました。 父親が寝たきりになったため、看病をしながら仕事もなかなか手に着きません。 お金がないので医者に見せる事もできず、ますます貧乏になりました。 飼っていた猫に餌をやる事もできないため、男は猫に「好きなようにしてくれ」と言いました。 すると次の日から猫は姿を消してしまいました。 （福娘童話集から読ませていただいています）
