We are live. Hey everyone and welcome to the Nodioinoth podcast. It's the Nodioinoth podcast, horse to play Nodioinoth. I am Wadiohosam.
And I'm the host Paul and we are joined by this week by our resident sci-fi nerd shall we say, like the resident trey, the resident anything to do with spear ships, the ginger goddess himself. That is the wind. So yes, we are going to do a bit of a pet project that me and Goodwill has been pretty much begging to do for since he got his way up with the Star Trek one and he put the idea in me head to do a Firefly episode. And let's see, we're going to discuss the movie as well as Serenity.
So we're going to do because let's be honest, there's not much content out there for Firefly if we just talk about the show because it got fucked up the other. In the nicest way possible. They got fucked. Before we get into this week's episode, how are you guys?
How are you doing? How are you doing? How are you doing? How are you doing?
How are you doing? Yeah, it's not been too. I've been quite an interesting few years. Call it with a new movie and you watched it quite recently as well.
That slash movie X. Oh, wow. I didn't like it. But I didn't like it.
If that makes sense, I could watch it. But then I thought this is not a new, it wasn't not special. It was just thing. But before we start getting into this shit like this, you want to do the disclaimer before people come for us to see any films or shit and stuff.
That's a good point actually. I didn't even think of that. So everything that's supposed to be our opinions and opinions alone gave you any topic from Chinese episode. Please comment down in the Facebook group and we can have an open discussion.
What we won't have is anyone come for us and tell us our opinions are wrong. We can agree to disagree so let's keep it fun, keep it kind and keep the toxic behaviour out of nerdism. Did I get a hint of you singing it there? So might actually get you the second one week.
So that'll be quite interesting. Yeah, so X was shit. I can't call it shit because it wasn't a shit movie. It just wasn't anything new.
I thought it was shot for shot and sick. It wasn't really like a movie I would say that broke around new grounds. I didn't think different. The only thing I did find was very interesting was the actress who played the final girl was the old woman that was coming up as well.
If you didn't know by the people that's coming out, that's on you. The people that's coming out that actually tells you what happens in X or... No, I thought that wasn't a twist in the movie. It was like when you thought of the cast and afterwards.
There was a few people that was in the cast. I was like, oh, I recognize the girl from the new screen movie was in. It's all the tits of the last for the pitch perfect, which was a pleasant surprise. I could go to Google now to search this up.
I like that. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was such a great feel because I really love Texas Jens so I'm asking it. So I actually got loads of vibes from that.
I thought the customer was great. The guy who was one of the main guys, the really rich one, the one who was producing the whole film, he was hilarious. He actually gave me a lot of Nathan Villian vibes. I could have seen him play in that part.
I don't mean why I asked him because I was just because I was just because I was just because I was just because I was just because I was just like, what's he called it? It was the guy of Independence here. Cool. Daniel's.
Is that just Daniel's? I was getting old. No, no, it's not really not. And he's talking about his teddy whities and you think of what the fuck?
Yes. I've never enjoyed it. But like I say, it's just because of the vibes and the feels I got a bit like this. I think because I recently watched Black Phone and then I watched that.
Black Phone was a complete different type of horror movie and it was a little bit new and interesting. And I thoroughly enjoyed that. That was very, very dark and like a little good ghost story as well. So the whole elements of that and going from that to like a subtle horror to like in your face, like standing on nails and shit, I was like, no, it was a bit too blunt for my leg.
Yeah, it's like one was very cleverly done and one was just he is the goal. Because I felt like my phone was just such a clever film. Like I didn't class it as a horror. You said it was more the thriller.
And I was like, it's just a perfect whole story. Like it was like, change lens, one of my favorite ghost films. And I could put it all near that. Really enjoyed it.
I thought it was cool. But at the very, well, with the writer was always been out the same five, but at the very like early it's not the new it's like old type of feel to it. But it was almost like was tendary, shall we say? Yeah, well, it's your hill and Stephen King, obviously it's more than someone but they have like interwinding universes.
So it's not too far fetched that it could be interwined within the Stephen King realm of stuff. I just I felt different to Stephen King for all it like it looked visually very similar. It just had such a different feel. The girl, the little sister was fantastic.
Definitely. But what about your good? Will I use anything interesting? I've been up to anything interesting.
Actually, a therapy for the monsters thriller. There's something in 2022 could look like something from 2010 YouTube. I think I think like a YouTube, you know, it's not like a bad porno. I would taste in porno is obviously different.
But I watched the trailer and I watched the analysis of it. And it was, I think that was Rob's universal didn't give an absolute toss about that. And they didn't want to throw anything. And I'm pretty sure that Rob's on the did the entire trailer on his own in my movie.
Yeah. It just it just did not I that is not a film I will be eager to see. No. And when you're going back to the porno reference, so you if you saw it search for Lily Monster porno, you wouldn't click on that link.
What's porn? I was. Well, yeah, I think after the reaction was on the get a cinema release. But then after the reaction to the trailer, it's Netflix has took the rights up and it's even been given the Blu-ray release quite early as well.
So I think I think universal. They saw the trailer and went to every avenue and just like, Hi, bye. Yeah, why not? Yeah, Netflix is horrible Halloween on let's go.
Yeah, we can raise our subscription price for this and fuck off. I pay enough to them and I'm having problems with their fastest stream and site. That was a lot of swearing for a Netflix. I tell you what the what the I tell you what the I did is job everyone on the internet and the dog and the dog would talk about it.
Sky runs attention for sure. Yeah, I got to be in a first reaction. But I bet when it comes out and I'll be seeing that you won't watch it. But I'll be curious.
I'll be dead curious. I think we should have a viewing party where we all get together and just watch it and just the badness. I'll dress as a character from the film like off from the TV series. That would be awesome.
Tall, tall as tournament. Good. Well, can be the grandpa. I'll be grandpa.
You can be anyone's done. I'll be anyone's done. As long as I can dress as Eddie Munson. I got the t-shirts now.
That's true. You've only got a lot of t-shirts. They've only got a lot of cool t-shirts. To be fair, they've got the bags back and socks.
I've only got your self on. You've got your clothes. So I know we've got a little bit of chit chat and a little bit of bander. We're going to try and do a little bit more of that because I think that's what's been missing the last few few months as well.
Just having a bit of relaxed chat show. Yeah, because we're like we're so dead set on. This is the topic in hands. I don't like we forget that we can still talk to each other.
Sorry. Well, it's sometimes mutable good wolf on time to time, but that's why he's on good. Oh, good Will. He's like our biggest cheerleader.
Like our chat is so missing him tonight. Because he's separating. I know. Hi Charlotte.
Hello Charlotte. Hello Charlotte. Oh, yes. So this episode we are aiming to miss here.
We are looking to have a little bit of fun and by my uh I'm going to wear the word of the M now. My air flowery bonnet. I've never said that right. Yeah.
Um, I'm trying to say flowery bonnet. That's why I tried to take the word. He's got a pretty floral bonnet. No, I'm trying to try and be best to get me hands on the jeans as well.
But they are expensive now on AB. I used to be going 10 a dozen when he would get them when Firefly was originally out. But now they are a little bit expensive. But yes, we are going to talk about the space western that could have been should have been and what we got Firefly.
So be interesting or be quite interesting or how you found Firefly because I know there was a lot of mistakes. A lot of bad decisions shall we say when it originally came out. So it kind of mess up. And I know we already said that it fucked up what we got.
But it's one of those shows that a bit like more rats were Kevin Smith that found its home on DVD. And that's why I found it because I didn't see the original run. I think someone said was went, oh, you need to watch this show because that we were talking about, I think was next generation. And at the time, like I said, I think it was done at Raven and the BBC too.
And like, oh, if you like start writing, you're like sci-fi, pick this up. And I think I went to music is one in the town. It was when whether it's the Selam offway, but say, it's a very expensive one. Yeah.
A music zone sold for, I think was 1099. So I bought off full season of TV show for 1099. What we got to get myself in for. And when I watched it, I was like, glued and I know now binge watching is kind of the thing to do.
But then it wasn't. It was kind of a watching code. I think I smashed all of it. I was at 14 episodes.
14 episodes. 14 episodes in one weekend. I just could not stop watching these. And they're not short episodes either.
Like another pilot ones, they're hour and 40 minutes. Yeah, it's done it too well. Yeah. And then the ones after it was about 45 to 50 minute episodes.
So the way the American style would have been long, but I was gripped from that first episode. And then when you finish watching, you'd think, oh, I can't wait for season two. You still win? Because then you do your research on it.
And say, like, why it happens and stuff. And it kind of breaks your heart a little bit of what went on and how it was trapped. And I guess it was at the time the most expensive TV show that was produced, like effects wise and then wise. So it was a huge gamble for them.
But I think like it's created, I know his name doesn't get talked about in good words. No, but I think he earned the chance to do more with it with one he came before. But yeah, I was devastated. But that was how my introduction and how I found Firefly.
So I'd be interested in your two. It was any similar or if it was any different? That was way different. I'm going to put this out there.
And I think this is not a running thing when Goodwill's on the shore because it happened on Star Trek. And it's going to happen on this one too. I'm not the biggest fan. Not that I'm not a fan.
I'm just not the biggest fan. I have watched it, but probably once and years ago and loves it and watched it when I originally came out, he knew all the issues with it. He talked like when we watched it, it was because he basically fought his English and he was saying, I watch I went to the cinematist and he said, I ordered on DVD. Like, I absolutely loved that.
And he was like, then why won't you watch the series? And I'm like, it's so much time. And then he put it on and it was a case of having to try and find because we were using a stream on show of us. You had to find the episodes because they were all out of order.
Yeah. And it just became an absolute mistake that I couldn't be bothered with it anymore. So I was like, you know what, if serenity is all I've got, then I'm happy with that. Yeah.
I thoroughly enjoyed that film. I think with the stream and service that you talked about, how did you get the links and the use them through the TV guide? Yeah. So how the original TV guide was set up.
And that's how it basically views. And that's why the original TV guide, which will get into kind of mess up. So your enjoyment of it probably was a factor because it wasn't quite done as well as it was done as well as it ever could be. And everything was on point.
It's just like, say, some TV executives thought, oh, yeah, we know better. We know how it's TV show needs to work and stuff. So yeah, kind of mess up. What about your goodwill?
Mine. I sort of remember it quite clearly. It was 2005. And at the time, the reimagined art star, Glatica, was in season two.
We just finished season one, season two, which is coming out. And I was I was blown away by that show acting right in everything, but the visual effects really got to me. I thought, my God, this is a for 2003, or 2005, the special effect were amazing. I was like, wow, this is a TV show.
And someone said to me, wow, if you like this, you'd love to fight for the same company before they did battle star got their start on by fly. They did both people did. And I started just reading on it. I was like, oh, my God, this is a Greek tragedy of a show production wise.
Like, you look at it and it's like, yeah, you know, Fox just had no faith in it. By the way, Fox and sci-fi never, ever should next. So like you fall. I mean, I went to I'll likely went to music bus.
Where was the 1099? And I was like, and he's a series, but 1099. Wow. And you know, it was pitched to me by a friend of college, you know, it was basically, it's a Western with spaceships.
And I was like, right, I'm automatically sold on that. And I watched the pilot. And I was like, yeah, I am really, I'm hooked on this. I think I watched it over a space of, uh, two, three days like, like, you know, it was, you couldn't put it down.
It was like a good book. And just the way it for me, Firefly came out at a time where standard science fiction shows like Star Trek, Star Trek, Star Trek, and everything like that. They had their own way of doing things. I was like, hi, we're going to go left field with this.
We're going to do this. It's going to be funny. It's going to make you cry. The visual effects are like next generation.
And I just thought, wow, all sci-fi shows should be like this. And I sort of understood then how Battlstar and shows go and falls from that. It sort of took the hints from Firefly, that they had a bit of comedy they could have, you know, they don't have to stick to the standard sci-fi tropes. And they all sort of subverted them and took the piss out of them a bit as well.
Yeah. And yeah, so... No, no, I'm disagreeing with the answer. Yeah, it was...
I was absolutely... I was hooked on it. And I, you know, at the time, it was the time because I was in TV at the moment, media at the time. And I just appreciated the tiny little details, visual effects of the production quality, the music, you know, it was a mix of Chinese and Western music.
And it was amazing. That's a good point, because I wanted to make it this close, because a lot of the sci-fi shows, or like, as you mentioned, Star Trek and stuff, it only normally shows you from the perspective of like, I know you do get like alien cultures and stuff, like from Starfleet, which is a very, very Americanized, which I know they've got multi-cultured and stuff like that. But the way that acts, the way they talk, the way they interact with people, even the language they use was very Americanized. Firefly flipped that script.
And it was like a big American... I think the way it was described was the two superpowers taking over, where China and America kind of come as one. And both cultures mixed together. And even when they're like swearing or same stuff, the same stuff in Chinese.
And even like some of the outfits, and it's very West-Mish East, but done so certainly well, that it's not slightly straight in the face. But you can tell. And that was something brand new for me. I was like, right, this is if this was in the future, and we did like, our colonizing date in all the worlds and stuff, of course that would happen, because then it's not about being an American.
It's about planet Earth colonizing things, so then taking over this world. So when should we do that, them two powers would have to coexist. Even like, say there was slight Russian elements, well, the end of Russian elements was always a bad guy, in five, which we'll call about. But yeah, and there was something a little bit Star Wars rather than Star Tracker, it's just because it was dirty.
It was dirty. Yeah, it wasn't like Star Tracker. It was way more like Star Wars, because it was like, we're in space. We ain't going to explain anything about it.
We're not going to explain the ships, the details. We're in space. Half full. And it just the way it was the language, for me, was really because it showed a future, where, you know, if you look at Star Tracker, I wasn't everything I've done in the future, this is the last week in English, which two superpowers me, the languages are going to blend together.
You know, the real world justification was, oh, well, these guys could swear on network television, and it's okay, because it's all Chinese. And it was just, it was just, it was done in a fluid way, where it wasn't like, ah, he said it's Chinese, and he's just like, there's no subtitles or anything like that. He was just like, yeah, this is the future. This is the future.
This is, you know, people will, and I'll be like, our language is probably taken from other languages over the years, because we're from the Jersey to the future. What's said that might not happen? Exactly. I'll tell you.
Yes. I'm gonna live forever if you didn't know. Yeah, it's been, makes it a bit of a journey, and like with everything that's, that's went on with, with this show, because the fun base is kind of kept it alive and kept it growing throughout. And like that's one of the things that, why we got Serenity as well, because of, because of the fun base, I don't think if the fans weren't as passionate and I kind of, I know we did an episode, not a number of our cult classics, and this kind of kept us on, I'm playing with the cult classics, because it is the main definition of a cult TV show that Firefly is still talked to and still revered to this day.
If it wasn't for the fans getting a boy in a new fan as well, I know the talk about on Disney Clust rebooting it or doing something with the pipeline. That was, that was actually going to be one of my questions was, it was within the world of reboots and re-do-overs and you know how comes it's not being done yet? I think it's a very, even more than Star Trek, it's a very precious series and it's a very precious universe for a lot of fans. Like even when he was aired, there was two separate campaigns to keep it afloat.
And then when it was cancelled by Fox, they were trying to field it off to UPN. I mean Serenity, if you go on Disney Plus now you won't find Serenity because Serenity was produced by Universal Fox. Netflix, yeah, Netflix. What kind of nothing to do with it?
That's our little fifth I had. And I think any, any moments of reboots over the earth, like Star Wars, you can't reboot this because the universe is so precious and so wonderful. You can't just say, this is the new battle Reynolds. I just wondered why in the world that we live in now, that nothing, even with the original cast, why hasn't anything happened with it given, because there's a lot of love behind this show.
I never understood that. I think originally it was the cost. I think that was the thing, because I think at the time it was the first show that where it was costing over a million dollars per episode to make. And to do it the same way, because Josh Whelen, I can say at the time, he was a kid when he didn't get his way at the toy's, came out of the pram.
So when the cancelled Firefly, he made sure all the cast got little parts and little extras in shows like Angel and Buffy. Like all of them, like if you watch Buffy and Angel, like towards the final seasons, the cast of Firefly, I come into it with major roles. And I think after that, he kind of did it for the fans where he did serenity. And when you watch serenity, it's a very much a full stop on a lot of the stories.
And even though there was elements and I know when we're going to break down and talk about like, see the episodes and stuff, there's a lot more into the verse and things that you didn't really get answers to that you're kind of still, I know the product, the comic, the comic does very, very well, like they keep doing lots of different issues. But the things that always leave the questions, like what was Shepard book's backstory, like how did he know so much about the things in you? The Blue Hand people, like I said, was always an autumn question, like what elements did they're playing? But I think the important story that they wanted to tell was the Reavers.
And that was in like, episode one. And then in serenity, we got the story of River. So we knew why she did things and like, serenity, you got that way, she says, I'm okay now. So I think that's why the fans, well, as a show, it couldn't have, well, after serenity, you couldn't look at the show about that, that nothing would have worked.
Yeah, if it did, an episode like season two before serenity, then yes, it could have worked with I think the money side because at the time there wasn't things like Netflix, there wasn't like crime that could pick up shows like this and kind of see of them, because a lot of studios were looking quick and fast, like probably is that we're going to make and let's be honest, when five, five first hit the David Shores, Ed Flock big style, the Reavers were horrendous, especially with like say the names on board, like Josh Reed and the money that they pumped into it, Ed Flock, but that was down a more, as we said, the Fox handling, like, I think the first episode of the show was the train job. So you weren't introduced to the characters and, and, and, and because the first episode, and we might as well talk about a bit more now, the first episode, the pilot is probably one of the best first episodes in TV shows I've ever seen. It's, as, as, as we're, like, as pilots go, it is very strong and it is very highly reviewed, because it does a lot, and Josh, we did a lot with it to subvert the cliches of pilots, and it was, you know, I can compare to the, the expanse that pilot, it was sort of like, hi, we're, we're in this year, we, you know, humans did this, right? See it by, and five light did that, they were like, yeah, it's, you know, the 26th century humans colonized.
See you. And that's how it went. And it just went on, and just told these people's stories, it's set up a universe without setting up a universe. I've made it fall in love with the cast as well, so it's easily and naturally, that was, that was the thing I felt but the opening always stands, like, to my mind, I can picture it same for same, because it's so memorable and you get a fail of these characters, but it's kind of like the ordinance based in the war, the battle of serenity, and like, certainly valid, and you see, Marl is this happy, go looky, eternal optimist, hopeful, and just basically, like, not about us, but like, taking charge, and that's the mile, that taking charge you see throughout the shore, but you get to see the man brick, and lose hope, and lose his faith in everything, he lost it in humanity, he's faith in like, in gods, the cross on him at that time, and during that battle in that war where he was just saying, like, if we hold, we can make a big difference, and the people he was holding for turned the back on him and just don't know, well, he was down arms, and he was like, we're winning, and then seeing everyone dropping, and then you introduce the Zoe as well, the second in command and how loyal and steadfast, like, she is the bad after the war, she is ultimately, like, out of everyone, like, Jian and all them, you would not foot was always, so it's the scariest person on that ship, because she would kill you without even a second thought, and put, like, see it, and that, I think it's only about four or five minutes of an orphan, and you see a man brick, it's hard-breaking, just to see it, and then you introduce to the cast, like, the crew of Serenity after that, and how the busy, now, like, kind of like, Robin Hood type characters, Robin from the rich, and not given to the people, but like, giving them the people they need, and trying to make money, and just trying to fly, trying to survive, and that's the Western aspect, whether I kind of like, outlaws, and you always cheer for the outlaws, that's the thing, you always kind of cheer, but the mile now you meet, after that first is a completely different person, he has not, he's got a glimmer, but he's not got the same hope, about the minutes of opening, you can see a man go from, like Paul said, happy go lucky, you know, he, he's a soldier, he's a soldier first, and to have his fifth, he's, and everything shattered, he never got over that, even, I mean, years after, and just after five, ten minutes sets up now, perfectly.
Yeah, and I think that'll be a perfect point, you're talking about the cast as well, because I think this is one of the things that a lot of shores do get wrong, or I can clear certain things to the roles in certain parts, again, I'm sounding unblowing smoke up with the shores, I'm a genuine fan of the shore, I don't know many, many casts that has been cast as perfect as this as well, like, say from like all the actors down, like everyone's super their roles, and new their roles, as well as they're hard, and again, I know we're talking like this is like a seven, eight season shore, we only got 14 episodes, but we actually got to know these people saw well in these 14 episodes that it was a little bit magic, but if you look at the cast, again, everyone knows I'm a big Nathan Fillion fan, like say I would hope the guy I kissed the guy, I would say, but yes, Alan Tudic, who then is so amazing in anything that he's in, but he lent, like say the comedy aspect to this, but his portrayal of wash was like say the, like I said, one of the heartbeats, because I can't say that one person was the heart of the shore, all in play of the part, but and if he didn't have all the different elements, the one weapon Alan Tudic is absolutely amazing, like JJ, that's why insurance policy is perfect. Yes, but he still gets shit, so that's why we give you shit, so you don't have a few sessions, so you can be a whole pilot. Okay, Jane. I never thought I would like a Baldwin.
He's not a Baldwin, he's another Baldwin. Series of the latest on how, but yes, Adam Baldwin playing Jane Cobb as universally recognised as one of the most lovable oaths that you'll ever meet, like Jean-Eurese's, Glen Zoui is just phenomenal, and she was phenomenal and Buffy as well, I know I'm Buffy Angel when she played a bad guy in that. Is this the same person from Serenity, isn't it? Yes, yeah, there's no cast changes, no, no, I didn't think there was.
Oh yeah, she was Lawrence Fishman's wife, that's right. I always get to hear this, a company, I'm just wondering, Marina, Marina Barakian. Yes, who's went on to do some great things and make them like Deadpool, she was in Gotham for a while as well, but she should be over there. And there's my biggest crush of them all, Jill State, I absolutely adore her.
Oh, who doesn't, man, she's beautiful. She's adorable, I'm looking at a picture right now, but this is why my face is all glowing, and I'm looking at a picture right now, and she's wearing a T-shirt, she says the otter's strike back, she is just an absolute sweetheart, but she isn't the show, I can't see if the show is here, because I really can't remember that well, but in the film is such a soft spot for her. Yes, but she was like the little girl next door that you always had, the little crush on as well, but like I said, we're on grasses, she had a boog who added a little bit, because I remember from the Disney show, what was it called, the Angel guy, you're saying about the news, the guy in the girl in the angel film, that's going to annoy the pan suffers, but he was the floating head on that, so that was on Summerglow, who next day was River Talent, was on the record. Summerglow was dorked at the time as being like the curse of science fiction, because nearly every show that she had been cancelled, so she was in obviously fireflies, she was in short, Sarah Conock Chronicles, and then she bade in big bang theory, we were people like, yeah, right, okay, that's the only thing that survived, she's never featured.
That was only one episode as well, though, bless. And next day, she always had a clear Simon Tan who irritated the foot gourder maid, the only one that actually irritated is, but I think that was his whole purpose of being in the show at times. Sorry, I'm trying to find out this bloody show because it's a normian that pan suffers. And again, angel that was the one.
And again, it gave us the amazing mark chabbard who went on to play Crowley in Supernatural. Yeah, it's so much. That's just blew my mind when I've seen him on the cast, it's and Christina Hendricks as well. Oh, yes, yes, yes, my wife.
It was very booblishous in that show as well. So yes, that woman is booblishous. She is stunning. Yes.
So, yeah, so with the Fox Maxing up the order, basically, that's how busy the played it out. So that busy didn't give us the pilot when the shut off and that introduced us like, said to the floor of the ship and how knowledge changed and busy. It does soften a little bit, but he never loses that sort of as a sort of edge all the way through the kind of the shore. And the certain elements that like throughout this whole season that we got, it does everything that people should, but not in the right way, if that makes sense.
He in the pilot, it's not a shot. This is another way that they always subverted like the chaset, you know, like the standoff when the the agent takes a river hostage in the cargo mold and he's like, oh, you move further about and I'll just walk, I'll just walk and just keep on. Oh, I was just Indiana Jones moment. Yeah, exactly.
It was just like, you know, there was no dramatic party just walking and chucking out like that. And it was the way that was just now. That's just how he played it was faster. He didn't have time for the big dramatic standoff or anything.
Yeah. Off you go. But it would always put himself and the Phi Phi first, if that makes sense, the Serenity, sorry, the ship that is the second best looking spear ship in all of Psi Phi, in my opinion. Actually, I'll never see anything that's more beautiful than the Falcon.
That is my thing. You came in that thing? Oh, yes. But he always kind of put the ship first and that makes sense.
That was very apparent in the season. Even when the agent first shows his hand and he's saying, oh, Simon Tan, you're under arrest and Mal realizes like, oh shit, it's not us. It's not us. It's called for smuggling.
And he kind of says, oh, it's a reward. So he's like, they can create someone to get somebody out with this. But then since he's the big standoff and poor, he gets shot in the gut. And then you see the softer side of Malcom out because he realizes how much he does actually care about his crew and Simon shows his hand and does a brave move by saying, I'll fix her if you help me get away.
And that was because throughout this show, Simon is portrayed as a bit of a coward. Well, it's from money. It's not from that type of world where all the others are from. But it wasn't always a good see type of move, I thought.
And it showed the strength that Simon probably would have showed more in the seasons to come and what we got in like, say, in the movie. But that element and that dynamic between Mal and Simon kind of like cleared like two and three all the way through the season. But I was quite like that chemistry between them because Mal kind of looks down at Simon, but Simon also looks down at Mal. But they're all coming from different viewpoints and different reasons for it.
I think that also as much as they're looking down on each other, they also look kind of like respecting it in a way or even being jealous of Mal, probably being jealous of his upbringing and him being jealous of the fact that Mal so brave and he's not as like elements that they would love to take from each other. Yeah, they despise each other, but respect each other, but like each other and admire each other in their own unique dynamic. Definitely. I would like to say that's the type of tension and stuff that you wanted to see and wanted to see more of and wanted to see that grow.
The only thing, again, bad things that we didn't get, which was always quite what Josh William did in previous shows and what he did for like saying like Avengers as well, he always gave us great bad guys or big bads. We didn't get that in Firefly because it didn't really get there or where it was leading to. So it was always a shame that we didn't get to see what we could have got or what big bads could have been interesting. He did.
He was he for sort of seven seasons and you can sort of you can see that the blue the blue the blue the men with the blue hands you know that was teased but it was there was the Reavers that was teased it was the men with the blue hands that was teased it was other you know the I forget his name about the space station who tortured Mal. Yes. You know you had these and Badger I mean Badger was just Badger's the quack of Firefly and they were all teased through this season I think they really would have been fresh out in subsequent I mean I know the Reavers were but the ones would have and I found them quite interesting and you know I just think that season one yeah he was dealt with it was dealt with a refund season one but that I sort of agree there wasn't one overarching villain it was just establishing a universe of villains when everyone is a crook. On her own thieves it's nothing in this verse.
Yeah well the proof that was when you were seeing Constance like had a deal and she's still over trying to shoot for a mile. I believe she's trying to kill me. No one's out. She's going to shoot me again.
Here's an item I like. We shoot first. We're just sure the desperation they were in there as well I throw up the episodes though. Like each episode you got a different feel and I know we've talked a lot about the pilot but the second episode again the train job that was the two was that right?
Train job is number two in the original order. Fox I actually looked at the airing order that they had on the Fox channel in America. My god the pilot was the last episode. Yes.
Can you explain to us why? This is what I read and I gave it to Samus what good because I know good rules in the industry so I could always ask inside of knowledge. I wish. I heard that when they filmed the pilot everyone loved it and then the commission filmed a few episodes right?
We can't broadcast the pilot because there's no action. I say there was very little action. It was all story based. It was all character driven.
They went we need something to start this off with. We're doing an expensive show. We're doing sci-fi. We're need to set off with an action pace and the train job was I see it was an all fashioned western style weather.
It was a western heist movie and it starts off with a kick and starts off with a punch and it is interesting and it starts off and you get the feel of the bad guy like as as Google said but the guy was called Ninske. I believe Ninske has that right. I brought off this really like sadistic evil Russian tie bad guy where he kind of rich and he's got these mercenaries that would go out and do his work for him and that was the tone that they wanted to set off. If we can get five of us what they've done in this episode you don't get in all the cast because you got in the last episode.
You kind of like jumped in like these are the people that you're supposed to love and they make any choices and decisions and you don't know why they're making them. It was it was it was it was the I mean like I said earlier Fox should never ever handle anything science fiction because they the executives even to this day they constantly had the all the definite fathers all the way to that because they just they had no Fox had it. Yeah it was it was not a definite father. Yeah but they just have no grassroots science fiction.
When it came to this they said to them we were there to enjoy exactly like Paul said because it needs exactly needs this watch just when it was like well the characters aren't established the universe isn't established as far as nothing is established. Yeah but it's got pew pew bam bam bam and it was like okay but everything was shut out of order and they kept it was so annoying when you read about it they kept saying to just when you need to lighten the tone of the show because it's too dark but then they would say you need to have more guns and more violence. It was like okay so you don't want it to be you don't want it dark but you want more violence and then when they promoted a show if you've ever seen them it'll make your eyes cringe. They promoted Firefly as an offbeat comedy to the theme to it to a smash mouth song.
And it was just if anything if anything if you if you ask they'd focus on the sound five-flight you're sure them that because they are not getting clued and it infuriates me and when you look at the running audit it was like two four five and an eight three six and it's like why how could anyone in 2002 and 2003 follow what the hell was going on. Yeah not just that just each week as well that would change the day it was on so it started on Tuesday night. Oh my god. Then in two weeks time it was on a Thursday then by the fourth or fifth week the point in the graveyard shift on Friday night.
The death plot. You generally just did not give a shit did there. There was the time there was science fiction fatigue because like I said you had established science fiction shows you had Star Trek everything but they were starting to be moved to the death plots as well but Firefly they had light star wars like Future Island like all this bubble they had an excellent excellent show they just didn't understand it. Yeah.
That was a death nail for it. Yeah but like when they go back to the actual show and and think about like the elements that they brought in like the train job after you've watched the first one has more of an impact because like say when they go to the town and you see the people are suffering and the things they are looking to steal from the train they realize it's going to be causing them more grief so they kind of go back and break the agreement with Niska who is like say when you look at like villains or bad guys in TV shows was sinister. It was up there with um I'm not going to compare them to any Star Trek but I would put them up there with like I would say Trinity color. Okay.
It had the possibility of being that that leaving the mark that much which we found off later in the season when like say what he comes reintroduced again like the elements and like the bonds and stuff but the thing I love about this episode and it's just a short sh- it's a shame and it shows you because it's so different to what you expect. It's so different to what you've seen before where Miles given the speech about and I'm going to give you the money back. You're going to take it back to your employer. You're going to tell them we didn't do the job.
There's no thing in it's finished with this is all that and the guy just turns in and keeps the money. It's going to pay for your funeral and start starting the speech then how Niska was going to kill him and Miles just takes a sigh and boots him in the jet engine and he just gets shot because he like he was going to do that like he was like the better way but in that realization that this isn't going to be the usual hero story. This is going to be a bit different. This is about survival.
That's what's when it's about survival. It's about survival and it's being surviving and it's surviving and it's unknown on TM MAND and then from the turn around to this person in the door next and say right I'm going to give the same speech and the guy just was yeah yeah money paid back. The deal's done. It doesn't want to get built in the engine as well.
It was so perfectly timed and so played out and like said no one flinched no one back to the dialed and it was just like this is how shit gets done in the verse and I was like this is going to be good. This is this is leading up to something a bit I've not seen anything like this before. Yeah and that was the point because I love the pilot. The pilot felt like a long movie you know you thought oh it's but it's still you thought this is going to be very star trekky this is going to take elements of Star Wars in there.
There's a lovable rogue. This made it different. That was the big surprise to me and I was like shit this is going to be like seeing my jam for 30 many years to come and I was always a little bit good at it. Well I'm truly brown course now.
Yes well I'm truly brown course but yeah so I'm interested in all because I know Sam you've only seen it the ones I know you're that big of a fan and hopefully we're selling it to you a bit more now. Very much. What are your favorite episodes of the 14 that we got? So go be good will be and give us that time.
It's time to think. Well I've sort of I mean I only watched the entire series a few weeks ago and I've just re-watched my favorite episodes today in New of appearing on the full podcast. The pilot 100% the pilot because it was one of the best pilots I've ever seen. The hour Mrs Reynolds I think you know.
Is that for a story Tyler? I was just purging. Yes you did generous. Yes sorry.
But again it's an episode that has comedy in it. The interplay between characters is really even in the first two minutes they're called authors with Mal and Jay. You know like you know oh you don't want to see her she's mad at you. How can you say that?
You know we get one of the best lines in the show. I swear my pretty floral bonnad I'll lend you. And do you think Mal's gonna get shot by Jay in but your office is sort of big massive gun that he loves for his wife. Yeah but you ask you ask some lovely interplay between Summer and not Summer River and Shep Book which is beautiful as well.
The other episodes I'll tell you what I have a little guitar here. I'll try and help you I'm not gonna promise much dude. The Hero of Canton I think is a beautiful episode because we get to see Jay in a different light. And there's a lovely song that's played in the bar and I will only play the first uh I'll say the first verse of this song.
Let me see if you know it. Jay in the man they call Jay in the bar. The poor man he gave them a four. I love for him now.
In the heart to explain the hero of Canton and the man they call Jay in. And that's why I never sing. So the hero of Canton because all the way through up until last episode of Firefly Jay is a bit of an orphan. He's the muscle of Firefly and this shows him a different light.
He landed on this planet and he was there to rob money and it went south and he ended up dumping any front offing up and he fled. And then when he goes back he's like oh man there's a statue of him. And he's like he's a hero to these people. They don't understand what happened.
They just saw someone dumping 50,000 credits into their houses and their yards. And you know it's a wonderful effort because he just liked to fit in or anything like that first. But obviously he gets rewisty and ladies of the night shows their companions, their own arse-reconpagnions. And you know at the end it's very touching at the end of the end of the episode.
But at the end of the episode it's quite touching. You see a different side of this muscle man. This look. And you think he's a well-rounded character in his own way.
It's gonna be a few more diamonds. But I am one of the smaller of a song. I don't give a fuck. I love the end of that episode.
When it's like the realization it's not about him being a hero. It's like it's the legends that keeps the murders going. And it doesn't need to be as true as true as the story is. It's what gets them open through that HDN.
It's just a beautiful sign that realization from Jin just grows him a little bit. He's like a tree. He's like a group. He grows a little bit that time.
But it's so... And I think Adam Baldwin as well. Like he doesn't like in the show. I just said he's the muscle.
He's like say the eye candy as well. He was great in shock. But I think actually that was the episode where you saw more from him and you got to say more from him since then as well in the show. Because you always wonder is he gonna turn his back?
Is he gonna betray or when is the betrayal gonna happen? We'll probably say that happened in a future episode or stuff. But the loyalty was always there as well. But I think that's where you kind of maybe come more than just the muscle for the sooner he realizes he's got a bit larger purpose.
But yeah that was a good episode. My favorite episode. I'll come back to something in a second just because it leads in from that it's the episode afterwards this one out of gas. And it's so well done because nothing really much happens.
But a lot happens if that makes sense. It's sort of a backstory episode. It's a flashback episode but not a flashback episode. And yeah that is a very good choice.
It is a lovely episode. Yeah but just by anyone who wasn't saying it just give you a low down of what happens on this episode. Basically there's an explosion on the ship. It starts off because with some of the episodes you get the almost the end at the beginning and then it goes back all the way what happened together.
So you get Mal on the floor with Serenity shutting down, life support scoring out and stuff. And basically it goes back through and it tells different stories like how Kaley got on the ship and basically she was basically banging the mechanic who was there. And she tells like the mechanic that he was basically not doing this right. She's not fixing this right.
And Mal hires her. It shows you how Wash becomes on the ship when he's got this bit of a smush touch. And I'll watch her. I'll watch her of course.
It shows you how actually the fine Serenity and how Mal picks on it over the other ships and stuff and how Jin comes on it which is inherently where Mal just offers a more money and he's on bunk and he trades the person he's with to join the crew. Did you like the ship in regards to the ship? Did you enjoy the twist at the end? Yes.
I thought that was very touching that. But pretty much the piston on the piston I was looking at the last day. The newest, I can't remember the name of the else that was last year. What's the last three?
The three judders called? The three from the last guy. Four swigens. Four swigens.
The ride to Skywalker. The four swigens are done the job and they're running towards another ship and that blows up them. They go, I'll go that hundred John Kaley was smelling falcon. So basically it was the four so we can stay on the job from Firefly.
But yeah, and like say basically all at ours, they're in space. On the peripheral, they stay out the way of the man and something blows in the ship on the engine. I can't be fixed. So I'm just like, we can't get to anywhere.
There's nowhere close. So he sends two pods out. One with Zoe who's hurt and they don't know how badly she's hurt with Wash and no, no, it wasn't an aura. It was Simon and River on that trip one.
And then with an an aura was Gene and Kaley and both because I have two pods sent in both directions to try and get as far as I can to try and see who can get help. And he sends a signal and because Wash was being a dick about this episode as well because he got to tell us about Mal and Zoe, which again comes through one of the other people that we'll talk about in a few seconds as well, is basically Mal's staying with the ship because he doesn't want to let us run it to go. He's saying I've sent a signal that someone comes and we'll get a fix and it's just one little part, one little part that's stuck the ship down and ship comes. I have no weapon except the signal and someone tries to rob Mal shoots them and Nick tries to lay for dead but Mal being the badass he is gets up and forces him off the ship and the guy turns says if it was the other way around you'd have done the same and he says quite clearly if it is the other way around now I've got my gun on you and you can see I haven't done the same.
And then it's basically Mal almost dying because the ship gets fixed and then he passes out and you think oh shit is that going to be the end? But no, he wakes up in the mid bay and all the crews came back because Zoe woke up and forced them all to. So because Zoe broke these Captain Rule, there's such a nice play of telling you the backstory but not shutting it down your throat. It was such a well done and well thought out episode that it didn't need to be all bands and whistles, a little bit like Phone Both with Colin Farrill and setting the play as quite minimal but lots of going on around it that you don't even need to have to see.
I was just well played out and well acted and I knew him in the brilliant, like say again not going to stop off or anything nobody was but he was absolutely brilliant in that episode. It was a four shuttle. It was a four-shadowed episode in the pilot as well and because when they land on Stephanie clearly says we need a new professor because we don't fix it, it's going to blow and we'll be dead in the water. Oh just make sure it doesn't blow.
Well yeah swap out. You know this episode harked back to the western themes that Firefly saw heavily influenced on because if you think the verses of Frontier, it's the western frontier, it's the United States, these people you couldn't go for spurs, you couldn't go for help and you didn't know whoever you came across in the frontier wouldn't just pull the gun out and kill you and loot you. This is retelling the frontier stories in space. It's beautiful.
The justification for you know the west lights, some of the outer rim colonies where they don't have any technology. So yeah they would make it with what they would make it with wood and horses and farming and so on. So yeah if you've got no technology you've reverted back to the earliest phase before an industrial revolution which would be the western frontiers. Definitely and laying on to what would be my second pick would be war stories.
The banter between Wash and Mal because like I say Wash has got the green-eyed devil with him and makes his relationship with Zoe because I didn't say if Captain says jump you jump on us and jump on me and he goes well do you know what we're happening? The Gorna on a mission that should be relatively simple just to say I've trade some medical supplies and I went old enemy from episode two of the Exon of the famous Niska and he's got his mercenaries back and he captures Wash and Mal and he's torturing them and with Mal being like a former soldier and Wash not being in that situation before you think they're just arguing with like cats and dogs like over like say how Mal runs the ship and how like you see how he affects his relationship with Zoe and stuff but it's not it's Mal keeping Wash alive by keeping them angry keeping them like alert because they've been electrocuted and like you've seen them being electrocuted and like after they've been hit by the electric current they go back to bigger and like the school girls and then when Wash is starting to feed away you can see the panic and like say the because Mal knows and Mal's really starting to stress and things shit when I lose Wash here so he's like you see that element there and then the whole when Zoe goes to pick up like the like the to triad the clipping all the money that they've got and I said all the bounties up like they've gotten the ship and the ticked and Niska and they've seen well these two are worth a lot of money from me this one will buy both Alyssa only buy one and you think she's gonna have a hard time shares and she's like that one I love Wash. Yeah it's that same old cliche isn't it like we did with the stand-off in the other episode where he just blows his brains out it's that you know who you have to pick one and you just watch. And he's like sorry I didn't have you got a bit of a speech.
No he's like oh are you sure he's getting off? That's the one I want to want to sort and Wash realizes what's happening he's gonna be can't leave Mal's only being out in my life because of what he did and then like I said the horrific part as well that goes all the reds of all dogs on him as well about he chops off his evens here then when he wasn't quite enough you'd give us too much money here's part of Marlon Reynolds to go with him just to try and antagonize him to react and as well because he doesn't want to give any of them away he wants to kill them all but he wants a reason to do it because he's a businessman at the end of the day but the fact that the ship after they go back they start armoring up and like getting the pieces together to go and get Mal back but Mal being the like say the bad ass he is he's kind of like broke the bonds in the sea up a little bit but there's two things that we find out about this episode absolutely bringing it done we find out how scary river is with a gun which is not even looking at your takes out about five or six people like blindfolded blown away and Kaylee's looks terrified of her but she realizes River Tan is a weapon yeah she says it to Kaylee afterwards because she's your power in the first thing it's not me yeah oh shit and how much Mal needs his crew as well because he's getting tortured he's fighting the person that was torturing him and it looks like there's going to be a mile is going to win and so he then pull up with the guns and say oh this is something the captain's got to do when he goes no no it's fucking well no it doesn't help it's like shooting the other guy is fortunate but it's the way he says it because he's like leaving this is something that he has to do and he's on all you hearing the dick because he's doing the distance he's just like no okay this episode yeah this is this I made all great episodes this one two things about this episode one the torture scene when I first saw Christina Royal in the cinema this scene was heavily in my mind when once he was being tortured you know I got an itch on my balls just a little left and second really it shows how would Mal needs his crew and how would you realize and his crew and he reminds me of the goonies I got it before Paul what do these reference I'm done wow I don't actually think I was gonna get a goonies reference into this one that was free yeah so after all the shitty and previous episodes one of the chat I was in that he's the one that goonies that's what that's amazing turn him into a goonies me now gee shot yeah yes what about you son I know you haven't seen it for a while I couldn't leave so would you say your favorite is serenity it's the film so when was the last time you saw the movie oh I was gonna cut the air ago I used to watch all the time like all the time we all know what my addiction when it comes to things and how I watched pitch perfect every year I probably did the same with this as well and I couldn't explain to you why I loved it so much but for a film that and you were about five five I don't go around I wasn't and you were about it I just didn't hadn't watched it I still didn't feel that I needed to watch it because I felt there was an already established cast and I felt something like a connection to want some straight away I knew who these people were didn't need explain it to us I didn't need to watch a series in order to explain it to us and that's how brilliant that film is yeah I love the way the movie starts or like say with the with given the explanation of how because you think you're getting alive this is how Simon got river out was now it's basically the operative that's watching back like the video and we know from that that point that this isn't just gonna be like a say a standard downy hunter or standard like say there and I've got the name because did you ever find out his name in this interview or was it the operative he was he was just the opposite because he was he was a high-up government operative the actor brilliant his deliverance of his lines all the way through he is so and I think villains are the most terrifying because they are so deeply deeply believe in their calls they are passionate yeah and that opens the way because you know your sin that whole scene with the tension when he's just knelt down with that thought yeah he's just like he's gonna fall he's gonna be just does it and he just the end he just wipe out his lips and we're gonna need this we're gonna need that I think why it worked as well because he was the complete opposite of what Mal was at the start because Mal didn't have any belief any hope except and Dobr would have had his beliefs and he believed him so strongly that he was going to fulfill his purpose and with his conversations with Mal as well like was bringing like when he was asking about um after this he killed all of like all of Mal's friends and like people who helped the fight fly went out and basically he just said no I'm a monster that I'm not fit for the perfect world I'm like you I'm I shouldn't I'm not gonna see that but I'm gonna help build it it was like this is deep and dark and like even throw off a sort of bright tea like a sci-fi you don't expect it to go that dark because you thought like the ravers was gonna be the scariest thing but the he was the scariest thing in that movie but I love seeing yeah the seaway murders the children is like you murder children is like I do that's how deeply he believes in this cause yeah it's silly it's Anthony Hopkins style acting of talking sophisticated and being utterly terrifying and doing so he took lessons from Hannibal Lecture on that because it was the the calmness and how he spoke came across terrifying but you know what each of our is just an amazing he's such an amazing actor the one part that I feel that it was out of character was you know just before the big space battle where you see you see serenity fire was an regular and he's a great character because of the bastards not even altering calls that didn't need to be there you know detracted from the characters cool confidence you know I think it's because you've been pushed by Marl to that point possibly that's the kind that that sort of brings out in him yeah because the call back in the movie is when like the first meet each other and he says don't try and annoy me captain you're not gonna you're not gonna irritate this or something that and an or a says I spent some time with him he would change your mind so it was kind of like foreshadowing that Marl was when I pissed him off at one point so yeah the the opening see the opening after the establishment you know earth that was and then we see Simon remember we see Simon you know to take river away and the opening single shot from the cockpit to serenity you know when the the to make a planet fall that was beautifully done it's almost seamless and the I don't know if you guys knew this but the the interior of serenity is a one-on-one replica of how it should be as you see ships where it's like oh you've got this you know this bridge it doesn't fit into how it should let me let him falcon like everyone always says a million falcon that the inside shouldn't fit the outside like it shouldn't fit this was just we didn't did it in a way where it was this would fit this would all you'd have to do is put shall I and they did they had two sound stages next to each other so you had one which was the upper deck which was the the cockpit the quarters the dining room and then you had another sound stage which was the cargo hold the infirmary and it was literally all it was linked into one fleet and like one piece and in the movie you can see when they go down from the cockpit in the dining room she's lagging it to the engine room you know where you go to the and he walks back and as that seems to follow the go downstairs and the camera turns from Simon to think that's the transition it's sore effortlessly don't you think my god this is this is one single here the production values that they had on Firefly they carry over to serenity and I'm really appreciated that because it was sore it gives you that impression this is an actual ship this is an old run down but fully like functional ship that people live in it was that patina that that grossed the rust and it's just sort of beautifully done that opening from that is just fantastic all the way through what i love about this movie as well again you don't really get to see see this that much it was a movie with balls but the decisions it made because like to kill off a character like wash the way he was was especially in the in the situation that that that's a hard decision because he's a popular character and you must know there's no comeback to kill off as the show doesn't really work as well or if you replace them it's like when the replaced certain characters in the community the tv show didn't quite have the same fail it didn't like work the same this again as it was known it was like this was it this was done for serenity i got the the one plan because and the club ship a boob without knowing more about his backstory as well that that balls he moves especially entertaining wise like because it leaves so many open questions and things that you you want to know about and even like say when like they've said in like previous episodes of the show when uh mild gores was in a movie you said it might be came across why he was you're gonna have to tell me about like how you know so much about this and he goes no that's in um that's in one of the the five-line episodes obviously he's after he's been injured doesn't he has that card to get you know special preferential medical treatment but it was the the way i mean like like movie side is i i see serenity as an open-ended full stop to the franchise and obviously when you get big movies and stuff like that one of the established characters is going to die have to star was anything oh well chef the book he you know he was killed by the the uh the alliance and this the way that washed eyes is is such a shock and it just hits you because he's just like i don't even think he's gonna come up with like some sort of quip like i leave it in pill and the way that but the way that zoey reacts to that you're sort of like when you first see that you're on her level with that because you're like wash wash wash wash and mala's like that soldier's just like oh we've gotta go we have gotta go yes he's got a way you've gotta go and he was such a shop of brilliantly well done and i was i was devastated when yeah i was like for me for not knowing the character previously that still hits like a ton of bricks but that's how brilliant they were written because i'd give a shit within that hour and a bit i'd generally give a shit about these people so when that happened and it comes out of nowhere because you've you've taken like you've already had your moment and then you're kind of just relaxing and then and it hits you straight in the gut same as him but yeah that's how much i that's like i generally did give a shit about these characters because they are so well written to where for the for someone who hadn't seen a series still got in all them yeah just like what used it in the series and this this the movie gave us so much fun service like the action between mal and an aura like see when at the end and he says oh we'll get you back to the fence because i'm not too sure you can see it's finally spheres like no that's that's an interesting answer um just knowing because that like that relationship was bubbling through and that would have been amazing to watch leading through this show and the episodes and seeing like the ups and downs like like we've got a little bit of a hint when um like say we've got a little episode where mild wife kind of anything and a jealousy on an anora's face and later on in the series when the one where they're defending the companions they're commanding hall house typing was a good good good way to do it but and the gift signing kiri that relationship got its point where i wasn't into yeah so the build up the tension but it was nice that they got that element and he said that as well that they only regret if he did pass away it would be that he wasn't with her and it was like and she was like fuck this i'm not really it was you know the bit in the bar early running a movie where she's just like uh ain't nothing to tweak mine i don't run on batteries and the way milders goes oh god i just know that and change goes echos down here really well but i'm like like coming from the series and then watching the movie i'm on mild sides because like clearly is the daughter yeah of now so you like i could yeah i understand more you can't know that because that's how she's portrayed to the audience and like if you watch the movie people are the same on the change side it was the go back to the anora though i don't know if you knew this poll did you hear what was planned for anara if the series would continue no i mean what this was hinted all the way through this news about me and i only noticed when i ran it through uh the other week she had a terminal illness all right and they were dropping hints all the way through the all the way through the first series and apparently josh really wanted to play that she had this terminal illness that was why she was driving herself away because she didn't want to hurt him any more than it already already being hurt and i was i couldn't believe that i never heard that until i that would have been a special storyline that i'm good we didn't get that because that would have been a sense total sense so she left like the companions like like off what went off world so she's kind of like going on adventures now so she's living a life more now because she hasn't got much left there was uh there was an episode where she had a health check and there it was like an annual companion health check and something said and she doesn't go into it apparently the facial expressions are there and it was that was like one of the first major hints that something was wrong with her right and then obviously they played off the tension between her and maal as like you know it's a clash of cultures it's a clash of you know he thinks companions are the w-word yeah but obviously it's legitimate but it's actually she's driving that wedge between them because she knows she's ill yeah or to save him from the heartbreak and being hurt anymore than he was she would just fade away she would just leave right it's devastating when you hear why you had plans and then you watch it again you can pick it up and you're like oh my god yeah that's what she was trying to do she was eliminating herself and his life slow it like slowly and then you know towards the end of the first season yeah you mentioned as well um in the chat earlier that when we were planning this they had some news was that the news that you got or something else that you've got for us they're good work on putting others on our own oh the uh the little bit of a tidbit uh i don't know if you know this it might blow your mind it's only time to don't worry firefly it's exploding the same universe as aliens really in the first episode when malgo segaegon being computer interface there is a wayland utani oh shit this one wayland utani right i'm gonna have to google that who made what was it the so called an australian australian australian australian australian australian australian no it's not going to be a lie it's no sounds googling like a motherfucker there you can see how he just went and had some involvement in alien and it was a nod to that but uh said potentially because alien doesn't alien take place in the 22nd century oh it can be the expert on that so it's like yeah and this is obviously five flies at 26 and this you know they said yeah it's the same universe wow well let's find out shall we uh that would be quite interesting yeah i i think that's versus mal yeah i mean five flies you're doing it's welling it's honey oh wow firefly the syrenity also features in the pilot episode for the re-majibar side latitude as well you see it's already flies from me from atheist and alien set in the same universe i know one of the spoilers uh someone said that in one of the episodes it's got the billinted uh it's got some blue from billinted in that franchise house as well and i love that little not like that no you absolutely right and it says that the firefly infrometheus it's the same Prometheus exists in the same universe and it's to do with the wail and utani and easter egg it's just way and heavy bolden in the city of the aliens at the time because i know the always point about doing it in the aliens tv show was just a secret show that they were playing the yeah so i mean it was lovely look the one thing i always loved i think it was in syrenity i think it's after the beat to maranda and and was said something like this is a hot sound of it's science fiction doesn't it goes you live in a spaceship honey i thought wow that's self awareness of that yeah i absolutely loved seeing alan turdick in this because it was just right off the back of um dodgeball and i totally fell in love with pirate stave so to see him play it someone like someone who didn't talk like a pirate but was a pirate kind of like he was he was more of a pirate than he ever was and he's like yes it was just so much fun and it's it's been lovely watching alan's career just get bigger and brighter because he is such a he's honestly he made that film for us i know everyone loves mal because of how charismatic he is and such but it was really alan turdick who like makes that film for like i go back for him and i go back to morn him you're instantly falling over them in the pilot way he's just like you know watch i was a look at yes yes and he's in the cockpit frame of the band stars and he's like yes this is a fertile land and people call it is like i should think we should call it your dream and that's just that for me i was just like yeah this is my favorite character now and the other bit where he's like washing up when they're trying to run away from the reefer and he's just like washing up what you don't he's like i don't mean to alarm anyone but i think we're being followed it's because he always said like behind the scenes you know when he said wash get us out of it he always used to press the sensory buttons to do whatever you ever saw it's like oh because they used for five five he was like bits of a Boeing 737 so like this Boeing higher whatever they're called steering thing and he said i always press this and i'm like why did you do that because there's everything but all i do is that all i do there's a bit in the just i love them so much because he injected that much needed humor but yeah we're in a tea they all got that bit of humor i mean they did all of it but it's like the bit where jane and mal have the argument in serenity and mal got you yeah jane saying something how about you and all those do you want to run this ship yes well you can't you can't so beautifully done yeah the humor in it is brilliant but it doesn't outweigh the action in the film the action is oh it is it's like watching someone dance they beautiful especially when river like real is fighting like we see like battling the rivers and which is like cf Simon towards the end because she's a trained ballerina was in jail she is yes yes so you see the move and the floor and everything it's so violent but smooth and like when you think and the fight in the bar that's one of the best bar fight scenes that you ever see why did you kick that ball that was amazing cineagram adam bobbins balls and that's what he said i went to that point i was like oh i know what's fake what oh it's got to hurt we are i know you pretty much answered this question as well but who is your favorite characters in the show you want to know what's wrong but i was just thinking to myself because i'm like yes washing is a brilliant character but every single one of them has something i love about them and so we've been the absolute badass that she is the honestly like you could put her as a captain and think nothing of it and jean and he's brutal honestly and just every single one of them just has something that that you can grab it like you can really grab it and connect yes absolutely but wash will always just because of the film aspect like i'm on him all the time like it's it's really bad so wash i'm the same with you sanny like wash for me is is he's i love every single character even some of the so characters like badger and stuff like i love every single one of that i think they're all well done they're all well rounded yeah well written well written wash yeah wash is he doesn't give a shit yeah and he's like i'm a good pilot you know the way he walks the way he hears the way what he wears he doesn't give a shit and you can sort of understand why someone like zoey would be attracted to someone like that because he's out of everything he's genuine and he is passionate in his own unique way he's passionate about flying he's passionate about zoey he's fiercely love zoey and will you know defend and that's why he's so jealous of mal because they've got that that depth of relationship that wash so desperately wants but it's every every carotic in the the show and the movie mr universe yes you know he only had what two scenes mainly and even he's so brilliantly i don't think there's any character that i don't like there was no way no wasted space i think that's what you get with a lot of t-shirts a lot of things there's wasted there's this filler episodes but when even if you do get a filler episode it's just there to build on like the character expect or to build on a relationship or to move someone forward that that's the thing that you get with this there's lots no cause i'm really weird but there's a lot of movement in the show yes and that's like with a lot of things there's nothing stagnating it there's nothing that just steers the same like there's never the same episodes i know like say we might have got different ones like afterwards we can never see it but again i have to offer the obvious because like say my favorite character in star wars was Han Solo the Han's Han's solo of their show as well and and let's not debate that if Mal was in star wars he would have shot first they wouldn't have had a re-edited that i know i just think so as well as Mal was an amalgamation of nearly all of Harrison Fords oh narratives he was every single one of them yeah Logan Indiana Jones and solo absolute jama but he still had himself so for all you could see the different different aspects of Harrison Fords characters there was still something that cheeky little something in there that that's Mal like and you know it's Mal and he was scary though as well because he used to have the look you can tell like he hadn't done this so well because he's clearfolded he's engaged in he's endearing but when shit turns sideways these eyes go black and like darkness and you think this is a man like no's nor limited there's nothing he wouldn't have done to to protect his and his mind as he would say he's seriously loyal and he's always when someone's not scared of death they become the scariest person in the world and you saw that in the the episode that you were about with when they were trying to take a friend home you know you saw in that flashback scene when in the battle and he's laughing in the face of death he when you don't fear death when someone does not fear death they are the most terrifying people because they've got nothing to lose they've got nothing to lose i mean i mean it's an entity it's shown that he volunteered to join the people who are the separatists it's a kind of an independent separatist isn't that bloody star wars how much more was it was very similar to between the two exe the elements there but i think with sci-fi you can't help but have them oh good god no yeah and everyone's influenced by everyone i tell you the one thing though i love all the sci-fi shows it's a serenity got 100 spot on nor sound in only science fiction sure to ever portray nor something it's very well that's a good point like say when you go back and watch and i think a lot of people will do but i think i will yeah it's one of them things where i went back when i watched the dvd i think i'm not one of these that watches all the extras or watches like like the in-depth information i just normally watch and enjoy with this i did watch it because you did got quite a lot of extras on the dvd the one thing that did actually break me heart a little bit and it still gets us now is the tell you when the though because as scudwell said the film that episodes out with order and stuff so when they got told that the the show was canceled it was on episode 12 i think it was the one where it was basically the where miles old war friend comes back and he's selling body parts and stuff and trying to do inside twin and it dies and they have a funeral scene and they get told that they're basically the show's been canceled and it's not really more so when he says the film to that scene it was like it would bury in the show oh it was so sad and the vice over as well you know when you can't run your walk you can't walk yet what was it you get someone to to carry you and you could see there was a tonal shift and it worked well for the story but there was a even in the body language and everyone there was a tonal shifting in you this is the episode they were told that is heartbreaking the thing is when one shows a cancel like this it's literally one four call at two and after you could be doing something you could be the gym oh hi yeah yeah cancel this drop in eight weeks yeah hi the thing is with certain show is they expect it they totally fully like the the office for example their first series is six episodes long and they fully expected to be canceled because the new english one was loved to the new that everyone like had such a respect for it that nobody was going to love this american one and so they're just fully expected but you don't expect it from a show that has pumped so much money into it just imagine they did that to game of thrones yeah if this was here's a question for you if i fly aired you know if you never had in it this year and it would be different it would have been do you think it would have been picked up absolutely say like it went on fox now and they canceled they did what they did back then they mess about they did and they got canceled do you think i mean i know mine so do you think it would be immediately picked up absolutely i don't know because like for me it's the cost aspect because as i said a lot like with shores now it's elements like fan off and all how brought the nine nine was here but that is a very cost effective sure yeah take take off all of it right to say like the effects nowadays it's not as expensive but not as expensive as it was back to tv is a million episode but tv is so different now tv is money-wise is revenue the same as movies because of how that we were in a completely different era of media so i'd personally think if would be picked up by someone absolutely i don't think it would be originally would be on signature tv it would be a payment service on the it would have been it would have been hulu it would have been it would have been i mean the the five-fly i mean i got again i go back to your fox from handle sci-fi if you look at the all-ville by some of that violin yes fox hates ethnic violin but he brings in the morning yeah brings in the same with the symptoms he brings in the morning and he had two seasons of the all-ville on fox and they were going to cancel it and seth went right screw you went to hulu and hulu like yeah absolutely we will do this and they shuffled way more money than fox would have done and if you listen to anyone who watches it now they're like my god why was it not on here to start with because it's visually better it's totally better it's quality and i think it's indicated tv when it comes to sci-fi it can't run anymore no not not with not with the production value you get now i mean look at hb or max yeah hb or i mean hb always had an app it's always had a streaming service it's just because of how well it's done like sisoprano was sex in the city game of thrones these are huge tv shows that eventually got them to where they are now where they are they are streaming megabook movies on there and still making the money to continue forward they're not breaking i think there's a community here is now but i think as well if the rooms are driven there's going to be a rebooted five-fied they need to they need to learn especially this year they need to learn from shores that are on streaming services you're not on tv anymore so you are not bound by the 40 to 45-minute runtime if you look at stranger things that was benefited hugely mindset changing of oh crap guys we need an hour no sada hour and 40 two hours and five an hour and 50 minutes if that's sorry it's good and it's tight run it for as long as yes good will it's been annoying because that is the one thing for the last 10 years that is annoying it's only in the last year or two where they finally realize shit we don't have to have it as a tight 45 minute we can expand we can have these extra scenes and stuff like that and the other thing i love as well so the detractable stranger things is still getting season four it's still getting visual updates as it is uploaded onto Netflix right now the patching shores you know the duffas are going yeah we've got season five like in my visuals and episode three season four yeah we'll go back and we'll upload that with a better visual effect yeah and the run time for me if you ever do but if this need to be back fly-fied do what they've done with all though have it's an hour and five if the episode warrants an hour and five or an hour and twenty do it as long as it doesn't feel it as long as it's tight and it merits it but here's a big question now actually i think this is one that sam was getting back to earlier as well at the start if they are rebooting firefly how would you do it would you is it going to be new cast or all cast this is one same story or different story of the verse because the verse could be impactful it's our effects are i would even stay away from the firefly name just call the new season the verse and have stories of the verse so like they crunched i thought i'm probably going to sound like a broken record here look at sartreck you've got an entire unit i mean i'll come back to another show as well sartreck it's not about one ship and one crew it is about the world it's about that time you know 23rd 24th whatever is about that world that people love the world yes they love the characters but they want to know a lot of the world do what they do do about sartreck about sartreck to go um they had two spin-offs and it was one with nothing to do with the ship firefly needs to do the same thing people want to know a lot about the universe want to know the world have don't reboot set it 30 well what was it 20 years set it 20 years after the events and have a different ship don't even mention marvellals don't even mention serenity or anything like that so you just want to be completely new but set within your world now see for me and i don't know i don't know if i've got the right because i haven't watched the series as well as you used to have but i think for people of yourselves who have you know you got you got shafted basically out of the series you got me and chapped it i feel that they should allow the original cast to give it even just one last score and even just pass the bat into someone else or even move on to a different story but at least give them i don't know what respect that they should have gotten i agree with you completely the only thing is to get the cast back now it's going to be difficult as i just said the killed off two of the big ones well one of them is actually passed away as well yeah um like to get marlon rose like so it's going to cost a fortune there the last i can't bounce in the Emperor knows in aura it was like big and dead gold and stuff at the moment moron yep her fees are going to go above and beyond so it's won't be cheap but what i would like again a little bit like it's probably like a mixture of both is made it me i'm going to be sitting in the fence a little bit of the arse going to get off the course like a bit a bit of both so a different talent would have one of the special episodes where the go after opponent now they're running their clearly working on a legorship or the go to off to a space station and so he's like head of security um they're sitting there running like signing or river doing the one thing uh or the running the gym he's basically got his own ship his own crew when he knows about us so he's a bad guy or oh he is the bad guy oh i know you're all about fees though i know you know what i was supposed to say as well but have whether they go to miles rest in place i would even kill off him like you live have my legend so the legend of my in the verse i know you say you know Nathan because obviously five-flowers is first leading role every role he has done after that he is always compared to five-flowers and i mean he said in interviews you know when he talks about the rookie or when he was not about even my dr horrible sing along blog you know he'd be able to be like ah what's this rather but every time he goes it's not five-flowers and i think unlike you know bring back back in the day when i was about bring back over the line i think if it was right if the story was right and it's done in the right way philly and would come back yeah philly and makes enough money from voice all the work doing that and then shit and DC movies i'm sure he would honestly i would like to think that if if the right script was there philly and would do it regardless of cut like regardless of v i really would like think that if he holds it it's i regard as what you what you're seeing he a dog working on it i mean to to the point i mean the whole cast of dogs working on it i mean they they had trailers you know like there's actors do they have trailers on the studio lots and stuff like that not one of them ever used their trailers when they had ricks they had it in that lounge outside the infirmary on the ship oh so they're very they absolutely they absolutely loved it and philly and is always steady in every when he's divorcing anything or anything like that it's not five-flowers and i think that for me you know as big as the saris he is i mean look at the the cultural impact that my love is hard you know i was to sometimes it's bigger than cook i'm a little mouse somewhere actually yeah tiny little mouse the i mean Nathan Drake from the Uncharted games oh god yeah he's just isn't he that is that is literally inspired by mallet to the point where they gave in nymphon as the first name and i mean price for ages i thought like this is Nathan philly voice and what's in the court it's really not but they are friends they are very good friends he and Alan turdick's con men which yes and there's a very exaggerated version of himself i can't i just not everything i can't think of his name no but i love him but they are very good friends no the north that's it we're definitely a player drick in the uncharted fan film and that was brilliant and honestly they can see him much yeah if you ever have half an hour away sanne watch it oh definitely well the uncharted games are my favorite franchise it's so good and you sit there like if you play from an echai do you want to like yeah this is Nathan philly this is my little fortune for us yeah absolutely with none of us this little this little production team got Nathan philly into a fan film so this is a chance when i get them on the podcast one day after you brought Kevin Smith on we'll do some memes and videos of philly and sineas definitely that's a campaign we are running on twitter as well they get Kevin Smith on this podcast so if you're watching please join us Kevin they're great they're great they're great they're good just to finish this up as well i think it'll be quite fitting to finish off the episode by talking about the final episode of firefly and how it was quite poignant the way it was done how all the like say the cast and like say the and the story was that the ship was taken over by early the bounty hunter and he was after river and he basically taken over the ship and it was a very good bounty hunter but how the kind of uh almost like made river out to be like super human and showed how she melded with the ship it was just beautifully done and honestly it was like a switcher room but it was a good western and good done so like pretty much as tailors all this time like any like storyline you could have guessed the twist but it still had you in the pockets and it was i know we didn't get many and we didn't get a lot but what we got was pretty special yeah it's just sad that you didn't get get more like not to sound like completely greedy this should have been more can i just add the final words from the strinity movie and i think it's quite poignant for some people especially at the moment got me know some reports i've seen this work it's when mallen river er in the cockpit and rivers palace in the ship out the the dry dock and it's raining and river goes storm storm seems to get worse and i'll just go as little pass oh that's it and i think that you know the loads be stormy weather always passes always passes oh my god that's such a lovely way to end this the episode i love the story i love this vh beforehand when like say they're told they're like what keeps it in the air it's all about love love i'll get you through and level i keep you up when it shouldn't so that was like say a damn two little elements of it it's always like probably a little bit of the mind but i'll give you that one that was beautiful yes so yes um the times actually fall over and i'm sorry sammy for having you sit through our love fest honestly that i don't i don't i there's not i've not always going to love the same things but it's lovely to hear and i said this before in the star trek one i love hearing people talk about what they love and it gets me kind of like oh yeah i see where you're coming from maybe maybe i will go back and rewatch it and i'm like i love it i love people who love fandoms and love talking about it but watch it on disney plus because it is on the right order now so they're freaking annoying in mind it honestly wasn't absolute arse trying to like find it and so trying to keep his cool and they still keep the hype up but we've got to actually this and it's also upscaled to 1080p not remastered but it is upscaled so you do get it right i can bet i can't say i have the one i saw really doesn't matter like it what what's kind of a visual i'm looking at this is what i was saying so yes you say that you're pirishing it oh to get the good news to get the good news if sam's new name is one i will he saw in the weekends ah so thank you again for joining us good will like it's been a blast and we'll have to click your little song as well so we'll get that more yeah sorry for my singing everyone you're absolutely brilliant the pair of years and we will get an episode where i can fan out with you over something because if you do episodes now where i've not been in like fully fan out with good will and we have some good chat so that sounds like a chat so about right so fan out with good will come on to the fucks yeah that's a dark head iris instead of the red shoe dimes excellent you just you just cleaned it right there yes we will so yeah so thank you so much everyone that's watched or so we don't watch other lyrics i know most of the people i do watch is uh out being social how dare they how do you want to send the we have to get this to school holidays and just to mention charlotte put in the chat did you see yeah i didn't want to have a yes it's passed away yeah a hora big fan um it's not on google yet because i did google it and it's not late she unfortunately she got diagnosed with um i believe it was dementia oh so sad well rest in peace may you fly high in the galaxy i said that really so i cast it we didn't i really didn't mean to sorry she's now gone yes so it's like one of these trends that has changed everything that we know about and she yeah she was an icon icon she was she was considering leaving Star Trek original series and she was uh switted to say by martin at lutherking june and said that you are a symbol massive for people and she was a lovely she she she came to middle she came to middle she came to middle throat you know the even planet's not in middle throat yeah she came to middle it's like yeah she she came for a signing man oh my god oh 20 years ago she came for a signing day to a woman and she was i mean what most people who work in Star Trek were going to get the update from not mentioning it but she was one of the most down to earth and most loveliest people you would ever ever meet so it's a huge huge huge loss of Star Trek community but as kevin smith says quite frequently on hollywood babylon big book it'll win yeah and also charlotte spooko this month is women in comics i hijacked it very inspired by our talk with hollywood as a kind of old idea i say that right yeah really inspired by holly and you know the not just women in conflict everything every aspect of women in comics that is this month's name for the book of do you want to mention twitch yeah we have twitch too these two muppets play a game on it i i i uh have power wash simulator to play her lovely the lovely lovely jake and who's my twitch and tony ox pro skater one two remaster excellent i know yeah i know we are i know we i want to do a team among us as well soon yes awesome i will get back to some time with jake to finish our resident evil game off i feel that that game needs to get finished it needs closure it needs closure going for that really does we need to know what happens i need to not play again and just watch other people die for a change well when you joined us the last time it things in the works we just want more basically i want more i want Kevin do you want to have the podcast as well i've offered to take services to get them on here as long as i'm coming from you new to
