Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the nerdy of North podcast, the nerdy podcast, was invite to know the nerds and one of you horse down. Now the horse pole. And today we have another top five for you. I wrote top five movies, disappointing.
Yes. So it was a difficult one because we didn't want to make it too negative. But we've talked a lot about what we love. So I thought it would be a good one to spin on our heads and think things that we wanted to love and kind of didn't, I don't know if it was like a guy we didn't get the remaining of them or it just flat out didn't work for us.
So I thought, like I said, it wasn't even my idea to be honest, it was my wife and Nick's idea. So yeah, so I wanted to do top five films to get but he had such a negative turn and I didn't really want to bring that to the podcast. But it's hard to talk about things he hates as well because I don't think there's any films I would say. I do.
I hate it because I would not be turned it off and not finished. That's the thing I'm not enjoying. Yeah, that's me. If I don't like it, it gets turned off.
For our example, Sherlock with Robert Downey Jr. We've got 10 minutes into it now but not kind of do it. There is one film in this that I will always, it's not on my list but I will always and forever despise this film. And it was the cube.
I, if being hate the cube, I remember watching it buzzing because it was like, it looked like a gory horror horror horror and I was quite young at the time and I was like, yeah, let's do this and I was like, oh, what am I watching? Oh, I hate that film so much and they're doing a new one. They're bringing the new one this year. Right.
Well, if they're not here, they don't get that. That's the only thing. There's five of them, you know, there's five cube films. How is it even one?
I don't know either concept, the idea of it is just so bad. Yeah, I'm sorry if anyone likes it. I just really don't want. So I'm going to kick this off with you, media.
Certainly. And so I'm going to go with me controversial one because we have to know that I've thought the films that I've really wanted to enjoy or that I thought of someone's told us that it's amazing and I went and sat down and watched them and just knocked off. So this one's a bit controversial because by all means, everyone who says this film tells me how good this film is. And I've still on sale, I don't get it.
I've watched it a few times just to try and get it's got an amazing cast. I'll give it to you. It was out in 1994. The Ron Tomatoes scores for this was 92%.
So quite not a bad score. It started Samuel L Jackson, John Travolta. Oh my gosh. Bruce Willis, Tim Rawt, Ring Williams, and was directed by Quentin Tarantino, Paul Fiction.
I cannot get away with this film. I know it's got some notable quotes and memorable lines. I do love the whole Samuel L Jackson, when he's quoting his eight year old and when him and John Travolta started by burgers, but the whole just fitting things in and not doing it in the right order, just to me just seeing like a mess. Yeah, I went there for the first one to be a bit controversial.
Like the love of the film and the moment in the poster had me all over. I actually love this film and I never could get away with it. Wow, I'm shocked. I am really shocked.
And I'm going to be very honest up until a couple of years ago, finally what to think all the way through. I've owned this film in many different forms. I have watched it a million times, but I never got past when Umotherman gets brought back to life. I would always either turn it off, fall asleep, fall asleep.
I would never, up until recently, I have not watched it all the way through. Wow. You were there. Oh, you really were there.
This was a film I brought John to the back to the movie was this company was a big comeback film and we did get a lot of good films from this film. I just thought it was a bit of a mishmash. I tried to, I know the talk about Marcel and all the different things and the brief years, but I've already got what the film is about. It's a Tarantino film.
There's no rhyme or reason. He likes lengthy dialogue. He likes mixing things up and mashing stuff together and making something that can go on screen. It's Tarantino all over.
But if someone asked me what perfection was about, I couldn't give you a synopsis. I was not saying I'm an anti-annoyed fan of Kill Bill as well. I think that's one of my favourite films. Clearly.
It's not really well of Western. Oh my God. The one I could not get away with. I love the Kill Bill films.
Kill Bill 2 is up there for one of my talk. I love that film so much. I watch the first one, just watch the second one. I love Death Proof.
I think that is a genius Tarantino film with the two girls and girl groups. And the grandkids type. Oh, in Planet Terror. Yeah.
In the next episode of The United States, the idea that they are in the same universe. I love that. I love one of the time in Hollywood. I know it's not every bit of a mix right up, but I like the idea that you give another twist on a very famous American crime story.
And at the end I was balling my eyes out. If you're not seeing it, I want to see a spoiler. But she survived. And it's when she comes to the gate after all of the massacre and she starts talking and I'm like, I couldn't have never really happened like that.
It was so upsetting. But it's such a beautiful film. I really like that. But here it is.
I'm not going to get away with it. But I don't know if anyone thinks that with the comments that I pull fiction, anyone keeps on this. It's a masterpiece. It's brilliant.
It's Tarantino's best work. But other than a few scenes, it's got some good snappy dialogue, which Tarantino film hasn't got. It's got cool lines. I do enjoy the dance scene with John Travalda and Uma Fermi.
I think that's what we've done. And it's called that. It's like from something I favor and even Greece, which we talked about quite recently. But yeah, I just don't get it.
It might just have passed me by. It might not be my tears. But yeah, full fiction, that was probably my controversial pick for the choices today. Oh, that was a bold move before your first choice.
You really, really set the bar there, didn't you? Oh, something got awful blurs. Don't worry. That's even in a high place.
Well, I found this week really difficult because I call it. There's not a lot of films. I hear it. If I don't like it, I'm just going to simply turn it off.
But most recently, there have been some moments for us. I was really looking forward to. And I'm going to go on my first pick was when I was really looking forward to. It's from Blumhouse production.
So like, I'm all over this. It was a psychological horror in it. It scored 56% of the rock tomatoes. That didn't even, like, I always look at the scores on the rock tomatoes and I didn't even bother us.
And that was in 2019, and not even the main star Octavia Spencer could see of this film. It's more. Right? I was looking forward to this film.
The trailer made it look so creepy. I remember the trailer about, because it was Halloween release, was it? Around about Halloween. From what I remember, I never watched the film.
I saw the trailer. But this creepy woman starts hanging out with some kids and then they're more tricking them and they're doing stuff that. Yeah, exactly that. She's a ballona.
She's a friend of one of teenagers. And because they think she's cool, because obviously she's an adult and she can get adult, like alcohol and stuff. She becomes the cool kid. And you know, in the trailer for it made it seem like it was going to be really fucked up, like really messed up.
And it was so flat. Like, so flat. And there was just everybody made the worst decisions. Like the thought process behind it all was terrible.
And Julia Lewis is in it. And she could bring us rounds. And I love Julia Lewis, but not even her. She got it was just it was so I just remember feeling at the end.
Huh? Yeah. Do you know what I like that was a lot of the Blum House films that's being released as of late? It felt it's a lot of them has been because I know they had quite a bit of success in the early days, but now it seems to be like turning out like Russia's the problem with the horror industry, isn't it?
You get a good traction going because they're taking a slow lead. And then all of a sudden they're like, oh, we've got to do this and this and get it all out now. It just doesn't work. And I really had to I hope that Octavia Spencer is amazing.
But even she was just like there was nothing like I was expecting copy be it style. Yeah, psychotic. And it didn't even reach that level. I came in that you get that with the horror film.
It just goes bland or boring and just goes to the generic formula. As you said, people making bad decisions that you wouldn't make. We've thought we'll go past this with the sweet and franchise when the point is out to a lot of people. But it seems to be going back on itself a lot of horror films, these years, which again is at this point, I know it's not similar to a lot of horror films.
Recently we've not had a great horror for a long time. I would say it since well, probably some new Halloween. That was exactly what I was just about to say. The new Halloween really did set a new bar for I would say not to to talk about the slasher genre because that felt new, even though it's old, it's an old idea, it's an old character.
It's still felt fresh and I put that down to the right inside of it. I think it's also a serious thing as well. A lot more thought went into it. I totally agree.
I think see horror is one of those is one of them genres where it has its say it peaks and then it's laws and when it has its laws, it really has its laws because then you get the likes of Jason in fucking space. Yeah, there's a lot of people that love Jason. Sorry, I'm sorry. And I completely agree with what you said because don't worry me a little bit now because I know Netflix is just on that career trilogy that's come out of nowhere.
I have not seen the last one, but holy mother of God, that has been so good. So good. It feels like an absolute like I know what set, well, the first one set in our time, but it still felt like in the style of the best. Yes.
It feels like I did when I watched screen. Yeah, it touched on all the different elements. I'm going to go back and go us through the parts. But the only thing that worries me is that it's going to be a mega hit.
Like I said, it has probably done again, is that going to mean we're going to get churned out the same stuff because I know straight away Amazon Prime announced I think was this week and all we're talking about, but they've announced they're going to do a TV show about I know what you did last summer. So it's always the same and it's always the same and it's something successful in horror. They kind of jump on the bandwagon and it will get lesser type of things and like the same same with the Bloomhouse because if you think about the purge films as well, the cinnatizing first version was really good. I really enjoyed it.
I thought the idea and the concept of it was phenomenal. I was like, yes, one day away, you just go out and just purge purge purge to the world of shit and I thought that was genius. I love the cast and I know it was brilliant. And then the second one and the third one, the TV show.
And it's like some things like some things are left with just the one. And I'll put this down to the likes of Ricky de Viers. He knows when to stop. Yeah, when to walk away.
So the office, you'll notice his series only have two. And I think the exception is going to be his Netflix one, which was which is getting the third series because he's only ever done two series for any show that he's done because he knows when it just that's it. I tell the story stories all with we don't need anymore and horror don't do that. They it's it's such a I just get to know him with it.
But I'll watch it. That's my problem. I'll see you watch it. Yeah, I've been quite selective with some of the films.
I always saw the trailer from our we put on the list of watch but we never got around to it. I'm a tea and something like the interpretation will not because I spoke to one of my friends the other day and I'm going to get on her if she's not listening to this season and she watched it and she actually really enjoyed it. She never picked up on some of the stuff that I did. I don't know if my expectation of it was so high because I really was like it's outside of like superhero films.
I find it very hard to get excited about open-com films. Yeah, I really got on board with this. I was like, I was watching all the promotional stuff for it and they got any red carpets and then as soon as I got a chance to watch it, I was like on it and it was just like that. No, completely agree though.
It's a hard one as well because when they do the promotion, the promise was these days, they're not only showing everything that's in all the good bits in the film and that kind of leads you a little bit as well. I hope that's not the case with the New Halloween film because Jesus Christ, there was a lot. I think we generally saw all the kills in that trailer. I don't think there's anything else left out.
I think when I run the record and said there's more kills in the New Halloween film than there has been in the entire first franchise. So that's it really looked like that was a lot of kills. But yeah, that's my first pick, Mar. So I'm going to go off to the 80s with this pick.
1987. Now, I was a huge fan of this grown up back to the cartoon. I mean, they told us they were doing a live action film, but I was so excited to see something special. Anyway, this shows you the difference between the picks.
The Ram to Martin score for this one is 13%. And if I know what it is, it deserved every 13 of it. It did have a few big mappers for the 80s, Dolf London, Kourti Hogs, Frank L'Eglie, who actually wasn't bad at all. And then Gella, that's the one.
This was, I went into this and I was expecting to see he man, Masters of the universe, Adam and battle catch and all them things I was so excited for. And what I got was Dolf London greased up in a weird kind of corner of the bar variance. Now, look, getting teleported to Earth, where why would the fuck would I want to see he man on Earth with these fighting these bad guys that weren't even in the film, even the TV in the cartoon? I think it was a beast man that was originally there.
We got to the skeleton, right? That was quite fun and interesting. But one of the letdown, I came out of that simmer just going, what about saying? Do you just cry at what your eyeballs have just been put through?
Like even now, like, it's so... The toys got put away. I'll see. That didn't affect my...
I could quite easily separate the two because that was not my human. But even now, there could be a lot of films. I was going through things that I didn't like growing up, but I kind of appreciated more as an adult. That's not one of them.
I can't see how they thought that was a good idea. Yeah. Doesn't make any sense. Anyone?
And all the anti-s and stuff to try to make things dark, they didn't have the technology to do the things that I wanted. But do fantasy. Make it fun. There was no, like, changing from Adam to Heman.
He was just a Heman from the start. Attenio wasn't a realm of magic or anything fancy as you didn't really say. Or you saw it was kind of the Castle Grey School where the Empress, not the Empress, I can't remember the name of it now because it's just as off that much. Even though I am rewatching the Kevin Smith car now, which I am enjoying, it's very different.
I've heard really good things about it. I think a lot of fanboys have buttered because the main character is not Heman, which I think surprised a lot of people, but it is a very female voiced TV car now, which I think is absolutely brilliant. Awesome. Do you know what Kevin Smith could put a pilot in front of us and I would be happy to sit and watch it faster because I absolutely love the way that that man's mind works.
I know he's not everyone's quitsy and I know everyone gets really annoyed at him, but he is me. I am exactly like him. If I get excited, regardless of how old I am, I will be excited about what I'm excited about and he honestly helps. God, I don't want to make this sound really cheesy, but he really does help with how I feel when I cut off the fender and stuff that I'm into.
I'm nearly 40 and I'm sitting in a room that has a Jar Jar Binks bust. To the outside world, people will be like, what the hell is wrong with this girl? But thanks to the likes of Kevin Smith, I'm okay with that. I like the fact that I have a Jar Jar Binks head kind of holders and I have a Jar Jar Jar.
That's for different reasons. I like the fact that you love Jar Jar Binks, it's just I don't like Jar Jar Jar Binks. I would never judge you for having it. That's the thing.
I really can't wait to watch this in the game, man. I'm so excited. I'm just waiting for her being asked to have some time together, who's really working hard at the moment to sit and appreciate and watch it together. Only thing my only company and the cartoone, again, it's just a little thing.
Sam Michelle Gellar is teal, who is a bit flat. A voice doesn't really change that much. You just really have the greatest range. If you think of Buffy and Scream 2 and I know what you did last summer, she's very much of one note.
She did really well. She's in a clone, she's not. She's in Rebels, Star Wars Rebels. And she got quite a good response from that.
I'll tell you who is a standout, or Lena Heddick Heddick as Evil Link. Hee-hee-hee-hee. As Evil Link. After the minister.
Absolutely brilliant. That's the reason I love the perch hall. It's because Lena hee-hee's in it. Yeah, going back to the travesty that was he, man.
Oh, yeah. I was trying to like get past it. Were you like me, though? Did you go and sit in the cinema or did you wait for the phone?
I went to cinema with my dad and I remember coming out and the cinema had a thing at the back where the hundreds of the movie toys to try and get you to buy. I remember just walking past me, going, do you want one of these in the movie? I was not going to go to the stage for it. I really don't remember if I went to see it at cinema.
I can't remember a lot of cinema trips as a kid. There's something that's stand out, especially the one where I had to be removed because I couldn't stop visiting Cryon, which the Empire. It's all the Empire, man. It's all the Sinema.
What was it called? It was the Air-A-C, then it was the Empire for a little while. It was the All-Star. I know it was where the point is, where it's on the corner.
I only had two screens, but I could stand on one side and the other side for at least. Yes, and they had bushes as well, and little people were having ice-cream stuff. That's all that was going to heaven there and had to be physically removed because I was in hysterics and we took us to Burger King to physically cut. That fella messed me up.
I don't want animals anymore, anything but animals in them because I can't do it. I really can't remember going to see him, but I can remember watching it. Probably when we grand out, this is probably the reason why I didn't put the same about that a lot because I'll be grand out and make very much of the same when I came to films and stuff. We like the same things.
I loved watching them with him. I loved hearing his opinion on them because it was so out there. If it was shit, he was going to tell you straight away, this is shit. I do vaguely remember watching it with him.
So it must have been a long way to get to, no problem. I don't think that's right. That's right. Yeah, I still want to love it because it is he, man, and Master's universe.
But no, that's just the name of the man. That's just double under addition in the corner. I don't know what he was doing. He must have got the whole thing up here for that.
Because Jesus Christ, that must have messed his career up for a long time. What did you do after that, Rocky IV? Was it? It was a very fall before after.
I can't remember. Bad times, bad times. He definitely did not have the power. No, he did not.
I know Frank Dali gets a lot of prayers for this film. People will say, this is half the reason why he watched it still now, because of how good his skeleton was. I was just a master of his crafting and such a cool actor. Cool.
So that's my number two pick. I went from the eyes of Pulp Fiction to the laws of Master the universe. That's a good choice, my friend. Good choice.
I'm going to just, I'm not picking a joke now that you just went down my list. And my second one, a recent, a very recent one, it scored 59% on Rotten Tomatoes. There was a massive hype about this because it was the second in the sequence. And it was held off and held off because of lockdown and dropping out in over the last 18 months and then last Christmas, the director came out and said, we'll give you an early Christmas present, my friends and you can all go stream it now.
And I wish I never bothered. It's a 2020 Wonder Woman 1984. I have I promised myself I was not going to make this list a DC pick on D because this one really hurt. I love the first one.
I have never felt so empowered and strong when I came out with that cinema, watching that film and I was so looking forward to this. Patty Jenkins just gets it. She just really gets out to make a woman be strong without really like having to force it down your throat until I saw this second one. Oh my God, they had the time.
Do you know what? For all the lockdowns brought, it has given Philip Mager's time. It looked like Ghostbusters after like, yeah, I don't know if you're following any of the promotional stuff around that I certainly am because I cannot wait for this. But he took the he said, because we're going to have to leave, I'm now going to go in and make up change if I'm just going to sharpen it up a bit.
I'm going to put some things that have been on the back of my mind and put it right. She had the chance to do that with this and she didn't bother. She just went because I know there was a bit of back, not that last week, trouble making the first Wonder Woman where she wasn't happy with the studio getting involved as much. That's probably a given.
Yeah, but what I heard is this was her film. It was no studio involvement. And I said, she looked down and everything, they let her get on with it. I think I know contract at least she wasn't happy because it was going to go streaming and one of them said, we've got this, we've got to get it out.
And that's why they did the whole, it's going to be having the cinema and a stream at the same time because if the cinema was open, it was shown Wonder Woman. But I can say with you, I thought there was elements of this that was a good film and there was good stories to be hold, but it was kind of like thrown too much at it. What the last we played, Chris and we played, Chainer was brilliant. As her, but that CGI, what the fuck?
Yeah. What were they thinking? It was so bad. Which couldn't we, as her, spot on, spot on.
And I don't think they needed to bring the whole, what was he called, Max? I know who you mean, played by Pedro as well. To me, he was the same in the reason this whole film because he was phenomenal in this. Yeah, but the two bits didn't kind of gel.
It's like, focus on one or focus on the other. It kind of got lost in that. And Wonder Woman was made some questionable choices for a woman. And this is what stings more than anything because in the first one, she is so sure of herself and I believe she will not let anyone question them.
When it comes to the second one, I know she went through a bit of a traumatic experience and that is going to mess you up. But her reasoning for bringing Steve back, her reasoning for letting them go and the way that she went on around him was so disappointed and really disappointed. I just remember thinking it's Icky. Yeah, this is Icky.
It was an uncomfortable film to watch. There was lots of elements where I think there's a lot of cringers part, but not cringers like where you entertain. I know if you watch the office and you cringing, you're doing it for a reason. But I think it was unintentional and I don't see why they were going that way with it.
And again, one of my biggest problems with the film was the opening, the whole Diana as a kid being taught not to cheat. But that had no relevance to the film at all. None whatsoever. I think it was simply just a reason to bring Robin right in because it was a massive mistake getting rid of her in the first one as she is amazing.
I think that's all the reason they did it for because there was no point in having that part in there. It doesn't it doesn't come into a decision, maybe a run at all. It doesn't even develop anything that we didn't already know about the anasins. It was pointless.
Yeah. And it's really disappointing if this is Penny Jenkins on her own because she's now been given a Star Wars franchise. She's been given a Star Wars. I worry.
Do I worry? Do I really worry when it comes to Star Wars because regardless, I'm still going to like it. I think we're looking at Star Wars now because I think John Franghor, John Franghor. John Franghor.
I can't get any weather to the estimate names. John Franghor, he's basically the man in charge now. I think anything that gets me at Star Wars is going to have elements of his CSO and I think that's a brilliant choice. So even if it's her film, I think he'll be heavily involved with the story.
Really, really, really hope so because John has really turned. He's turned that franchise around. Yeah. And how did we not know that he would do this given he is the reason we have the is the reason we have the MCU because it took a chance on Peter and Friends and let him go into an Iron Man movie because let's be honest, if we were going to start a Marvel franchise, why would we start with Iron Man?
Yeah. We wouldn't. It wouldn't have been. He wouldn't have been the best chance.
But he was and John went for it and how did we not trust that that's what he was going to do and what he was doing with Star Wars right now is phenomenal. Really phenomenal. Let me go back to Wonder Woman. I think that's the thing I don't want to know because I watched it again.
I was so bit lead to Spider-Man. It's not a problem. As a day safe and Wonder Woman is it really the end of me? I don't think I don't think I've had an audience for Wonder Woman.
But I still enjoyed the first one. I thought the aspects and the message you've got with this, it was just all confusing. It don't even know if the bad guys really that bad. It was because he had a heart.
He really did have a heart. And I just I just remember when I came out the cinema for the first time I was working for another comic book website and I remember coming out the cinema and just having this rush of holy shit. I feel like this at this age. How the hell are little girls feeling watching this because it was so empowering.
Like really it's hard to explain. But I just had this like rush of I need to get on my laptop and I need to put down how I'm feeling and I wrote this piece on what is bringing to me then my age. How is the young girl like this is this is what young girls need to see is films and characters like this to give such a strong and clear message of where they are in this world and I thought that was going to channel through this one and I love cow good-off is perfect as Diana. I know she wasn't everyone's first choice.
I remember when I promotional pictures came out. Yeah, but she's too small. She's too skinny. She's not you know she doesn't look like how we expect Diana to look like.
I did not see any of that at all. I just I was so very looking forward to seeing what she was going to bring. And she is perfect. I really enjoyed her and just really enjoyed her and just really both of them.
Which one's which one's neither. I really because there's no change in who she is. There is a definite shift in who she is in this one. Yeah, it's very much she needs a man by her side.
Yeah, that was that that was a premise I got from it. And again, it felt like she was reaping that people block. I'll say that's the way I think there was no explanation. Save takes over someone's body without that permission and she's OK with that.
And only time because you think all is you look like safe? No, it doesn't look like Steve whatsoever. And it really pans up not the best picture of the me after how I felt the first one. That it again, it's the whole I need a man to survive.
Isn't really the message that we should be given out because we don't. I certainly don't. I'm incredibly independent. I don't get around.
I love my husband's, but I know find well. If he walked out tomorrow, I'll be completely fine. I'll be OK on my own. I like my own company.
I know my I like she doesn't give me that at all. It was such a different shift in one. I was not expecting I was really I was hurt by it. I felt a bit betrayed by it.
But I got my number two pick Wonder Woman. Cool. Right. So I got one I'm leaving till last.
So that one will I'll probably get a little bit of a bit of a get. But the next one again, people will probably say why we disappointed this film. Cos again, I was a big fan of the franchise when I was a kid. And when they said they were going to make the film, I was going to be excited.
It could be fun. And what I saw was pretty much on the darkest scariest things I've seen as a child. It was a nightmare fuel, but not in a fun way. Again, this one was 1993.
The run to us always 28%. So again, sure it doesn't do well. At the end of the film, that did make a joke. I promised that there was going to be a single, which again, not a chance in hell was this ever going to be a single starring Dennis Hopper, Bob Hoskins.
And John again, not good for names yet. John, John Leguizamo. That's the one. And it was the Super Mario Brothers.
Wow. You think of a cartoonish game that was full of vibrant fun colours. And then when you see the film, and it's supposed to be an Italian plumber, when you've got this cockney British actor called Bob Hoskins, he looks like Mario. Well, can he folk do an Italian accent?
And you've got a, I don't know John's from a heritage, but he is Latino. He's not Italian. Yeah. And Dennis Hopper just being this weird thing.
I wouldn't even know what to call it because the performance is just, it must be not a lot of drugs. I thought I could say it was playing Bowser because he was supposed to be playing a giant dinosaur human hybrid because that's what the said, the same content of worlds was there weren't dinosaurs or human hybrids and it was all about genetic experimentation. Princess Daisy was captured and needed help. And that's pretty much all I can remember from the plot because it was bizarre.
And when I watched it, again, similar to Masters of the Universe, I was thinking, what am I watching as I get? And this was meant to be fun. And it wasn't a fun film. Don't know if that was the premise or the idea that they were going by, but again, it still stands out.
It was, I was lucky. I didn't go at the cinema to say this one. I think I got a pirate copy from a friend down the street. This was again during the whole pirate video.
It's just for his when a lot of the films were getting released when someone was in the backless center with a camcorder. Did you use to get a guy come round in a van to rent them out? Or is this just how awful my street actually is? I have seen that, but no, I didn't get them from the guy from the back of the van.
But we used to get a guy in an all day screen van that was literally just painted white. We had to wait for the guy in the white van to come round with a Friday night. We see that these days and you get blocked up with a guy. I'm concerned with how you have. You just showed that, oh, Barry over this.
Yeah. I have seen it. Just probably the ones though. Yes.
It's just one of them. Things like, as a kid, you say the car do not go to the time. How can this not be fun? How can this not be a kids film?
It's a horror film. It's a horror film. It's a flat out horror. I remember Dennis Hopper's thing.
For all I've not seen it for years, I've obviously seen clips. I watch a lot of What More Joy on YouTube. It always comes up when it's like the worst film or the worst character. What were they thinking?
And Dennis Hopper is just vibes of pure velvet. That's where he went when he was doing a children's based film. I've been visiting me here. When I searched, I was doing searches for these days, I searched it, Mario.
The one of the images that pops up and it still makes us feel uncomfortable. It's Dennis Hopper's eyes wide, white, bulge and eyes. But he's tongue but it's a dinosaur tongue going. All the way, I'm looking and it's like, but it's like long and it's like, what's going on?
And I've got the little coopers as well. He used to be little turtles and stuff like that. Mario's fight. And I'll come with the whole call in the film.
He's having cute heads. Huge bodies and tiny heads. I don't know if it was like a joke in there or something like that. And again, it was bizarre.
I still don't understand. Again, if someone knows, can understand the storyline, then please send us a message and it's just... Give us the synopsis for Pulp Fiction and Mario Brothers, because we want to know generally out of curiosity. And it was how can you get this wrong though?
How do you get Mario Brothers wrong? You have like, there is a 101 storyline you could do of this. Yet they go down the darkest route possible. Bob Hoskins mind is a great, is it?
Mario, like the look is there, but... You know, after he's filmed that, he's fired that agent. He won't be working with that company again. He's probably, he's probably, well, probably not now, because he's dead, for a turn.
But at the time... But I remember the time is again going back a few years, because I think Pulp Hoskins was again, not talking about Mario Brothers, but talking about Hoskins, always made a still up, it was made a bit sad actually, because they asked him the question saying what type of film franchise, because you've been a lot of films, you've done a lot of British films, American films, what films would you have always wanted to be in? And you were never asked. And he said that Harry Potter's.
So... Oh, that's all. If you think of all the different, like, film franchise, British actors that were in the Harry Potter's, he would have been perfect as well as one of the characters. Yeah, he would have.
I'd not to bring the level of the tone of the podcast down, but this is just me all over. The saddest part about with Paul Hoskins is that he just retired. He literally just retired and he died. It's like the Conhandle retirement.
And he just passed away. It's so sad. He was such a great character actor. Very much the same character in a lot of these well-known films.
He was very valiant, he was the same as the guy in Mermi. You know what I mean? But it worked for him, because he's just so bloody likeable. And oh my God, to see him in a Harry Potter film would have been unreal.
Like that is Harry Potter just had that the opinion of our best actors. And he would have fit in there perfectly. Oh, that just brought my heart. Cool.
So yes, so my number three pick is Hey, it's me, it's Mario. Did you ever see I'm going to send you a link that's later when I find it, but there was a TV series of the Mario Brothers. It's so bad. You think the villain's bad?
It is terrible. I remember the car owned by the car number TV show. It was a TV show. It was, I think, it's very American.
And it's it's very low budget as well. What even more robots in the fucking Mario? Even even more, if you can believe it. Well, moving on to my next one.
I don't understand why I actually got hyped for this, because it is a remake of one of my favourite films. It was from 2015. It's got a 30% on Runch models and it stars Sam Rockwell. It's a polygeist.
And I generally was looking forward to this. And I don't understand myself why. I just remember saying to Anne that brought another polygeist film about however it's got Sam Rockwell in it. So I don't think this is going to be a bad take on one of my favourites, because I think I've told about this in the podcast.
It's even been a one of these. This is a great film. It is amazing and nothing can touch it. But I was very interested in seeing another because the impression I got from the Martin was that it wasn't a remake or such.
They weren't doing it word for word. This is the same family. It was going to be a different tape on it. And I thought, that's a bit interesting.
Oh, I was so wrong. The trailer made it look creepy as well, because it's like dolls and puppets and stuff. And actually that element always does creep you out. And again, same as you.
I was sitting a little bit with the Martin and thing. It's got Sam Rockwell, but it doesn't do many bad films. He's always an interesting character. Watch it now, you want to?
Oh, that's a great disagree on that. One of those is a great just to come. Just a great character actor. He doesn't, there's not a lot that he can't touch, that he can't turn around.
If you've watched recently, George Orrabbit. Oh, well, that film is just beautiful. And he is just amazing. There's not one person who's not amazing in that film.
He's standing there like saying, I know the kids. I absolutely loved that. That end scene where just before he helps the kid, sorry, spoilers. When you see him in these outfit, that was absolutely comedy pure gold.
But obviously, putting that at the same time, it's such a horrible subject matter done poetically as well. It's just take a white TV all over with it, with how he made that film. And I remember watching him saying, somebody asked him, how do you sell that film to studios? And he went really, really hard because the opening line is that it's a kid who is obsessed with the Hitler youth and has Adolf Hitler as his imaginary friend.
How do you sell that? But thankfully, he did. We failed. I think it was because of Thor Randeroff.
And what do you want to do? We went this. Let me do this then. I'll do this.
Yes, just tell us just his mind is better than anyone else's. When it comes to creativity, he just gets it. Sam Rockwell is, but they even go to the Green Mile. That could have really the kid is scary.
So when I saw him, and he's also another one of my favorites, I'm Preston Nixon. I love him. I love Ross Nixon. I like Bango Films.
I love my goshy so much. And I've watched it a hundred million times in Sam Rockwell. It's just brilliant. And it's just such an amazing actor.
But he just didn't work in this. No, I think I'm not so sweet. It's weird. I've got a scary film that has to have scares.
And this wasn't scary? No, it wasn't. And I am petrified. I know I have dolls behind me, as you can clearly see.
I have if you're watching on YouTube, I have dolls behind me. But I am definitely terrified of baby dolls, of proper baby dolls. I have the porcelain ones, but I'm not stopping them. Porcelain dolls, but mainly baby dolls, like one that girls have as kids.
Like I've never owned a baby doll because of my fear of them. I had one and she was called George because everything's called George. And she was massive. She was huge.
And she used to be my protector of my toy commit and used to sit in the middle of it. And I was okay with George being there, but I just don't do baby dolls. And when I saw the Margaret and for this and we're using dolls, I was like, yes, this is going to scare me. It did not.
It really, really did not. I just remember at the end going, like what if I just watch like, I can't get this time back? I think I've watched it about two or three times. I still can't remember.
That's again, shows you how I think when you talk about really ex-ins that they brought out, Paul guys was always a hard one to touch as well. So I know the other had a seagulls, even the seagulls weren't that bad. Again, the first one was always going to be the classic one. But with this, it just didn't fail new.
It didn't fail inspired. I just felt like getting by numbers. Yeah, exactly. And that's not how it came across on the trailer.
And that's half the reason why I got behind it. I am not a fan of reboots and redo's. And especially when it's something that is very close to my heart, but I give it a chance because of the trailer. And I was thoroughly looking forward to watching this.
And it takes a lot for me to get anti-trivial thumbs. I read and I showed them the trailer for this. I have to show them the trailer for things, otherwise I'll go on more than I trust you. And even he was like, yeah, that's really good.
And it was not. But I've just had to go and check something because it was bugging me. And we talked about Frasnics and our even I brought Frasnics in front Angela from the Masters of the University of Wisconsin. So good.
Brilliant. I was like, I should have played Nixon. We don't want to put anything wrong. No, I don't.
So there you go. I would have to say that would not have been my radar because it's like a. I just remember that when I was coming to Omee list, I had to think about it. Like what really, a lot of mine, a lot of mine, all recent, because I can't take my memory back to.
I felt back then. No, no, certainly. So it's a good thing. So one of my fourth one now.
So this one again, I was stuck with the marketing because everything you see about this one. And again, this might be a lot of controversial because I know a lot of fans of this one. I think this one is quite a lot of our heritage, but I wanted to love it because of one. And it's everything like say it to do with sci-fi and fun and like actors in it completely brilliant.
And it's done by other time, one of my favourite directors who's went off the boil quite a lot these days. And this was 1996. Again, the rock and tte as the main cast. This was Tim Burton's Mars of Tax.
Oh, I did not know why you were going with that. Kind of just put this out again. I only watched it in 2019. I can tell you the exact date of when I watched it.
It was really exactly when. It was because I was a babysit in my mum's dogs and I was on Netflix and I put it on. And I don't get it. Don't get it.
Don't get it. Don't get it. Don't get the hype. Don't get the film.
I actually couldn't tell you what happened in it. I watched it. But don't get it. Everything that they bring this out, like the Martin looked amazing and looked all sci-fi.
The aliens looked fantastic and they had robots in it as well. And just it had a very, I think the word was it the Tom Cruise World of the Worlds field to it as well. But when it came out, it was just a one-nor joke. All the silly big was just saying, let's say who could be the silliest.
The cast weren't really dialed in from my, like, I thought that it just weren't really there. I know Johnny DeVito did well. He played himself being stupid. Jack Nicholson looked bored and he was in.
It's like a few good men. He was bored in every scene. He's in that one as well. I'm sure the Jack Miggles are looking.
But the thing that got me as well, I know everyone, the jokes that the aliens got. But the thing put so pickles, so you don't even know what the whole conversation is. So you never get that side of the story, which to me was a complete missed opportunity. I know it was probably intentional.
It was supposed to be throw there. But I would have thought it would have been a more interesting thing for the idea of why the aliens were there, why the aliens were doing what they're doing. I know it's like taking all the world and shit like that. Why were they doing that?
Was something happening with their world planet or the areas of India? I just wanted it to be fun, but it didn't feel fun. And again... It's not.
It really isn't. I got mocked by Carolyn when I told her that I really don't like this. But do you think the Tim Burton and Quentin Tarantino have some a lot in common when it comes to film it? I think they have some really big hits and then some really big rock.
I know they've got such a loyal fan base. I thought it was something I've set up. I know it for a time anything I've done did. Couldn't really miss the mark.
He was like the money making machine. And all the other films have just been unwatched. Like I said, Alice in Wonderland and the Willy Wonderland. Yeah, I guess the Willy Wonderland.
Actually, I know you pulled this on the Facebook group the other day. And I think was it Nick who said Alice in Wonderland from Tim Burton? I thoroughly enjoyed the first one so much that I tell you that I have on the left leg that I started in 2013 and is still not finished. Sorry Beth, but I will be getting too shortly about it.
