Hi everyone and welcome to the Nodie of North podcast. It's the Nodie podcast hosted by Northern nerds. I am all your host Sam. And I am the other host Paul.
And we are joined by someone who's just pressing buttons and making things happen next to him. This is just normal. That's Paul. He's doing all of this.
Look at Jake, short of it. I've got special effects. I can do this. Yes, we are joined by Nodie Jesus himself, the Messiah of the Mega Drive.
Yes, we have Jake. Hello, everyone. Thanks for having me on this November episode. This is my month, really.
So it's my whole birthday month. But until now that I don't care about birthdays, I've got to this year, I'm just waiting for the Father time to take me. A treat release. Sweet girl.
Oh my. This eternity of this, the strength that we call the video. No. It's been done with my friend.
It's time now to move on to Best of Times. I promise we'll load you in a train and then we can drive it into the Nodie of North. It's my thing. It's like, what if we remember the third of November?
Yeah, that's it. That's the one. That's the one. We've made it so.
Yes. I'll let something get a clip out. Not a clip because I'm on a big clip. I'm going to get something to do with the disclaimer first before we get to the number of players.
Yes. Let's get this out of the way. So everything is our opinions and our opinions alone. If you'd like to discuss anything from today's episode, please come and join us on Facebook page or you can try this in Discord.
I don't know about the comments action because of what's going to be played. Yeah. What kind of do this? Well, what we want to have is anyone coming for us and tell us our opinions are wrong because we can all agree to disagree in the pandoms.
So let's keep it fun, keep it kind, keep the toxic behavior out of nerdism. Yes. I forgot the end of the discussion. I forgot the word.
I'm going to remember it next week when we're in the BBC. The next week. Yes. Sorry.
I'm not going to be in the clip yet because I can see we've got a lead in the chat. We've got a Christmas chat. We've got a Becca and a Becca. I want you nerds to go and grab more people because I think more people deserve to see a lead in the bar.
So when we get a few more people joining us, we might not get them joining us. So that will be your punishment. This is the task for the lead and the Christmas node. Get more nerds to watch us to see a lead in the bar.
Before we get on to that, there's been a certain show that I know on a certain, something in a certain jig have been dying to talk about quite literally the being the one that wanted down this road and busy have a conversation, but we won't want to do a take a while, but then being a Sami went bad. So we didn't do it. That's a true story. Yes.
It's always best to do things in a good. Yeah. And we wouldn't have been a justice. We really, really wouldn't know.
So instead of the usual question, I'm going to ask, how do you think that I get that all along? Down, down, down the road, down the road. I will be happy if I'm in here. That's not ever again for a bit.
I really want this out of my head. What a TV show. What a series. Like the series we never asked for.
No. We never asked for it. But we got it. And thank God that we did because that just proves the Marvel's right in the ability right there.
Yeah. And it tricked me so bad because when it was called it was everything just like watching, it was just like, you know, just like about the movie that was like, I'm gonna make this thing a little bit of a little bit of a real thing. Well, let's try that. Zero.
Zero. Zero. I think it's like the, it's not just like a little bit of a little bit of a pink Dream, or a color. It's like, like, a little bit of a color that's just like a.
It's like a little bit of, I might be there. That's like a little bit of a leopard. I would say the build, that's a little bit like a big one but it's a little bit of a talented movie. It has a little themes to it.
the model totally took away the attention of that of this programme to where expectations probably weren't as high because we're like, what the fuck are they going to do? Like, how does that even work with? Oh my God, what from start to finish? And I do want to watch it again.
It's an in its entirety was just some of the best acting. Okay. Great conversation with someone regarding this as well, because we are all in the same type of mindset that the model like the Disney course model TV experience has been very hit in this for a lot of things. Yeah.
Yeah. Whether being focusing on things a lot bigger and trying to move like, larger storylines along, it's kind of not really what we want. It's not really been like kind of hitting the home runs what's potentially certain. And that goes with like say the Marvel Universe as well, which we've gone to when you guys do the countdown to do with it.
A lot of the model, like everyone's got these roles, kind of glasses when it comes to the MCEU, not all of them are hormones, not all of them are perfect. So again, with TV shows, but what they should forget, in my opinion, and again, my opinion could be worth jack shit to anyone. When we focus on the little characters or the little side quests on these TV shows, it works amazing. And this is what it is, it showcases characters that nobody really knows about or even would have cared about and gives them like a big of stage or a big of story.
And again, it's almost like a reading a mini comic book. As a comic book, I read a few issues. And that's where the Marvel TV landscape, in my opinion, should be focusing on saying, all right, we need to progress the multiverse or we need to progress this character to get in here. We don't know that that's that's the movies.
Again, we can do that with a thing, but you concentrate on little things and just move the story along at a fun piece. And just tell us a standalone story. I know there's only a bigger thing coming from this show. But that wasn't what the show was about?
No, no, it's interesting. Because we've had, like you say, we've had a little bit of everything. And it always seems like they don't know how far they want to go. Like they never they never give us like the full on movie cameos.
But then they always try and like, you know, like shoehorn people into like the actual movies and stuff like, you know, the Thunderbolts is probably going to be a bit of that. But this was like, this was like, you would say in a side quest, like this would have been like a six issue run being like this is Agatha like in like, you know, the new like a new version of a backstory and stuff. And that's what comic readers love. We love a good like mini origin, like story just to like look at and then, you know, the character is just in the world and you can use her however you want.
That doesn't have to be like, she doesn't have to be like, she doesn't have to be like, she gets a whole movie now because she completely serious. Yeah, it doesn't need to come to that. I love the idea of the character of Agatha the Harpness, but who nobody really knew about you've got a really of known you scholar which history in order to know who Agatha the Harpness is. Yeah, fantastic port.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And she would have been like the new midnight sun's game and stuff.
So like, just definitely like in around, which is never like the starring thing. But now to be able to use her like she was used in the comics, especially with the ending, and she just looked phenomenal at the end as well. And they made such a great choice with Patti Le Fourn was one of my favorite characters. Patti Le Fourn is one of my favorite people in the world.
That woman is just a saint. But her participation in this was just phenomenal. Her ever saw the lawn had me in tears from my start to finish. It was just perfect.
The right in the news was so clever. And just so brilliant. At the end, you mean for all? Yeah, not that's a thing when you go to like the sweet and the switching of the it's I think the bit switch.
Sorry. I don't know why I said it all the way around. The last two episodes because Marvel again confused the hell of a city. We're releasing the last two episodes.
And as a one thing we'll get why they do not is it just a line of Halloween? No, because it was so cleverly done. You like the last the second from last episode feels so much like a final episode. And still that 30 seconds when you're in his room, and you're seeing all around and you're going and you're confused and like it's like, it's like, shit.
But then you get the backstory of the road. I got confused from so I was like this because I would have just enjoyed like a which is story down the which is right. But how did they look like loss and like kind of like the way it lives and makes like a child and her relationship with death after that? Like how it was going forward?
I was mesmerized like literally that last episode I was glued to say with my mouth job was like, yeah, it had me fucking hook line and so yeah, it was a minute Nicholas started singing down the windy road. Yeah. And I went what the what the fuck this song means absolutely nothing. No, yeah.
But then also like, yeah, they wrote it together. So that explains why she kind of hates it because it's like reminds her and so yeah, but she's like, look at the manipulation. I mean, we all really manipulated the role, which is what freaks either the route initially when she sees it because she's like, that shouldn't have happened. Yeah, but how she rolls with apparently everything because that's why you're saying you want to watch it again, isn't it?
Because you want to try to try to try and see it all. But it's just that we were all concentrating on the revelation that Billy's created like he's been nippies done something that's a reality reality for like what his mother can do. But then you're not looking at the manipulation side of what she did for centuries with that song. Very, very clever.
I lost my shit when it went through the whole cycle of all these witches and the times that she done it. And the group, the last group she had was going to be no different than any other person had before her. And I was like, it's just brilliant. And honestly, like how cool like the sort of fake Fleetwood Mac episodes, you know, with the whole like band stuff and that was just like, oh, that's the kind of fun stuff you can do with magic, which I think a lot of people like, you know, when they do like, oh, this is going to be like, you know, DC dark, like it has to be all like, you know, like sick and like grim and everything.
Like they also forget that magic spells can be silly sometimes, like in a sort of Dungeons and Dragons way. And like, then you can just do one episode of like really stupid stuff that everyone has fun. Yeah, I love that. I love that.
I was with Alice and when death came from Alice. And I was like, Oh, she's gonna bring her back. How naive was that? He was devastated.
Actually, on naivety, I didn't know anything about this series. I didn't know who was going to show apart from death got spoiled by a Funko pop. But obviously, I'm aware of the character from like Infinity Gauntlet and things that I've put I didn't I didn't put anything together about Scarlet Witch connections. I had no idea that it was going to do a bit and switch on like that at the end.
So like, I was proper along for this ride. I'm really glad I didn't hear like all the chatter and like the like the regular Marvel spoiler talk that usually goes around like, you know, like this, this big character is going to be in the finale and stuff like that. And we just, well, to be further, we had the biggest model character in this stuff. We did well, as you said, when we got swelled by the Funko pop before that, can we just take a moment to appreciate Audrey Plaza in this?
He has not just how amazing she looked, what a fucking performance. And anyone who is like, if you know anything about the Marvel comics, there's there's basically levels of powers or levels of being in the comics. And at the top, I've got echelons was there. Yeah, it's one of the number one big hitters in this and to have a mega debut because fair enough, I'll be honest, it's probably like a few like a few a few movies live, it should have been in the movie.
I mean, old man, that also has got no chance that now we realize that. But again, having her in MCU, having debt in MCU changes everything. And it opens up so many different things. Like I couldn't do a fuck about my festival now because that is much better than me.
It's, it's, I can see this making a few people mad that that didn't collect us because Marvel have been doing a lot of afterlife stuff recently, but in different, like through different cultures, you know, like it's all the stuff in moon night and then there's Black Panther has their own afterlife and stuff. So I think like, I think like the fans will be a bit like, well, why didn't she mention like, you know, the crocodile, the people person for like a moon night, it's like this show was kind of trying to stand on its own. It's like a sequel show to one division. But even then, like the one division links just were dropped in when the made sense that weren't like forced in constant things like that.
No, no, no, no. And it does it opens up a lot of possibilities with death. She's for all the very focused on her body count in this one and the souls that she needed to take and the fact that she was pissed that Billy had managed to kind of beat the system that he had the corrected. She gen the death in the comics wouldn't have given two shifts.
She would have actually been she would have actually seen it as a, Oh, what I'll do new, but she can also has the ability of bringing people back. Yeah, so she can do that. And so they kind of marble have given themselves an inch now to start to be able to whether they take that is another thing that might not she may just simply exist here and never come out of, you know, out of this kind of place. But if you're the kind of giving them a little bit of a leeway now, say, Oh, look, it's exciting.
Again, if you're a powerful power, it's going to be an everything on the model thing going forward, I'll probably watch it. So especially in the outfit, like you say, Paul, like, because Marvel do have this like tiered system of like, you know, beings, then like if you're going to bring galactic, if you're going to bring Galactus in, then select the other thing. Sorry. No, no, no, that's why I'm saying if you bring in Galactus in, then that like leads into like, you know, who's bigger than Galactus and then it's like, like, you know, the people who oversee like time death, like the concepts and stuff like that.
There was a kind of like a little callback to Dr. Strange as well because when Dr. Strange and kind of the name the last way you meet at the end and it kind of cut through time and jump through all of your bars, kind of does it the same way where she cuts through the back scenery and walks through it. Did you see how nonchalant she was when she did it though?
Just like, how effortless it was for her to cook through that? And then she just kind of like, you could have done this in the first place kind of thing like and just walks through it. I like that. I love how like real the road looked as well.
Like, as in, it looked like almost the honest sound stage most of the time. I don't know if it was but it was this Marvel's now showing the behind the scenes on their tiktoks, right? It shows you when the actresses first walk on and sorry and Billy and the look on their faces. I'm just sort of happy for Catherine Hahn right now.
And she is kind of, kind of has been probably everything. She has always been, I mean, crushes and command. Like, you could get the films that she's been in because she's always been the side character. She is now the main character.
I never forgot because I've got a crush on her. So that's why I want to watch Agatha. The only complaint I've got is how it sounds about because how do you do a ghost as well? The ghost didn't agree at the end.
I thought it was just that. Okay, I wasn't too bothered because I was just like, I thought, well, you know, the white hair is fun. That's more Agatha than the minute when she got a brawn which put on her. I was like, there it is.
All they have to do is to tie that hair up, put it on top of her head and you have original Agatha hardness. It felt a bit more cast with a ghost than anything else. So that again, but that's my only complaint. Again, if that's only thing I've got a complaint about, there's done a quite a good job.
Questions, the questions that I had throughout this, well, one big one was when we found out about how Billy Kim to beat Billy, all I can think of is that's how he is in existence that Tommy is going to have to be the same Tommy is going to have to have the same kind of experience in order to be in existence again, and how they did it in that episode, broke my heart when he screams at the end, and my killing his boy to save my brother. Oh, some of the dialogue in this just really got me Catherine Hunter as soon I didn't what was it I didn't, you know, an incantation, you know, to spell, I made you from scratch. I am probably butchering that but oh, such a beautiful line. So this means we have we have like a new probability which in the MCU and then possibly his brother is Speedster as well.
That's what I was saying. Yeah, it's for the first basically, like a mini quick silver. But again, that's going to be interesting. It's just going to lead up to basically when we get the young Avengers, that's where the game for these things is I believe.
Well, unfortunately, nobody likes young super heroes. Certainly, but they've got no critique. I can argue with that one because the leader of the Avengers is going to be fired upon me. So I'm going to be fired upon him.
Myles Morales. Is it going to be Myles or Tom Holland? Right. It's just Myles was a few years ago, the leader of the Avengers, I didn't go down that road.
No, because apparently what the hope to be is they're going to have Tom Holland's Spider-Man taken over the Robbie Danny Jr. We're all where it kind of connects and builds from there. So that's... It probably should be because I was going to say like the young the young teams I've enjoyed in the past is young justice.
And that very much had, you know, like the big Justice League guys were like in the background. Yeah. So we're kind of like connected. I think you need that connection to like the established people because if you go like if you go like full on like Runaways or something people it won't connect as well.
And if you want to do a movie, you need to have like a reason that full fans will come in to check out the new Superhero. I totally agree with that. No, definitely. And again, we are getting excited and there's a lot of possibilities.
And as we said, just by leaning into things like this is game from. But yes. No blade though. No.
Well, no. It's not being cancelled. It's just being taken off the board for now. But the Kushner Alley is still blued.
Yeah. So it's a team around and they can't seem to stick with them. He should just ring up somebody else who's directing a different movie like can I be in this one? Just like go above the head.
Cause everyone's going on about the line in the deadovers of Wolverine when Blair says he's going to be one Blair. I forget about shit because it was a Blair day. Rachel was being well. Well, also like I didn't take it.
Like I think some people took that line as like, hell yeah, Wesley Snipes will never be another one. But I took the joke as Deadpool being like, he doesn't realize that he's like, he doesn't get it. That was how I saw them present the joke. Like I didn't see it as a dig at like the you know, the blade project that we're trying to do.
They did that's pretty shit on like the side that they're going to be into the production team that's worked up with them. So yeah, that's what I mean. That's like their colleagues off the time. I don't think Ryan Reynolds gives a fuck.
Cause then he suck. Shake hook from the front. Cause he was meant to be a parently. He's got her scenes.
I don't want her in the film. So that's a kick off. But yes. So what I'll do now, if you know, it's one of the one no, like if people are waiting for it, I'm going to pay the video.
So tell them to watch. So send out the bigons. Great, really, great. Like if I was a gondor.
So here it comes. I'm going to go quiet because we won't hear it because I don't hear it again. It's laughing. No.
But yeah. Enjoy. Yes. This is the one.
Take it. It's been a part of being a relationship up and forever. Hope you guys get to hear it. There are guys who are passionate about the people.
Don't miss that. This is the school system and I regret promising to do this. Tell them that. If you want to do this, it's happy.
And check out the video. It's bad enough. It's bad enough. I've seen it once before.
I think it's just a powerful season. One run and then. And we bought you this. So we don't have to do it all through.
So I think that's all. Chris is going to be one kind of a grimey that I feel. It's just one of the things that you've got to be stuck in. Just me.
I'm like him. That's going to be absolutely me. So hard. So we don't have to always fucking out.
You know, this is one of the things that we've done. It's hard grimey now. It's singularly. I know I'm going to have to be grimey.
It's all you say. It's all off. I'm going to take a bite of something. I'm going to take a bite of something.
Bye. Bye man. Bye man. He drowns the gravy.
He's gone. I'm loving it, Jake. I didn't want to talk about what he said. Whatever he said.
It's not important. It's just a part of the thing. It's in the gravy. And he goes under fucking the wall in the gravy.
I'm not going to talk about it. I thought it was about to leave family. I thought it was a time. Yeah.
Becks. Becks. I don't know how you do it. The girl deserves a medal.
Like the biggest of medals to put up with it. Do you know what happened after this as well? I don't know if you were in the discord. So here's the part two.
You know, apparently you tidied up all of the gravy bits and stuff and put them in a bag. But forgot to take it out to the trash on the dog. The dog. The dog eat.
The dog eat lately. The essence of these weird stew that you make. The fuck do you think about this. It's me.
Becks. We love you weekend. We do. We do.
We do. Yeah. Smells like meat. All it said on the gravy was for me.
I don't know what flavor it is technically. I'm Sorry. Yeah. So with 30 minutes in that part of the phone, yes.
I'll tell you what while we gather ourselves together, I will give you the taglines for the v odd. So the first one I want to call backwards, actually. Because the last one better. freedom forever or freedom forever.
Oh, you never. People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people. Yes.
Don't let them put that on a poster. An uncompromising vision of the future for them from the creators of the matrix. Oh, I like this one. I am the idea and ideas are bulletproof.
Yeah, that's good. And the last one, last one, this one, is remember remember the fifth of November, the gunpowder trees and implot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder trees and should never be forgotten. Yes, I think I was the main one that went out because I said this whole plot is around English legend, or English history, which is Guy Fawkes, which again, I think the one that he said before, something with the idea one is brilliant, when it comes to this movie.
Because this is a powerful movie. It was a powerful comic when it came out. I remember reading it first and then normal. I know that when I did it, I'm being quite shocked.
Like how close they want to keep it until the need and to ones of it because of how blunt. And I don't know if we do try and keep the ill-plated ill-plated ill-plated ill-plated ill-plated ill-plated ill in the group, but I know on the podcast, we do a few things slide. I think it's difficult to not have to that political conversation in this movie because it's probably one of the most political movies that ever they need. But massively.
And I think a trigger warning should be put in place for a lot of the conversation that may come up surrounding it. Because there is some quite, especially for me personally, it was the homosexual side, even from the comics to this. It's a tough one to talk about, but something that you can't not talk about because it's heavily played within the film and the comic. And the comic was published originally in 1982.
And it was done through a, what were they called? It was an anthology magazine called Warrior. And then DC, and then they shut down. And then DC Comics allowed them to complete it in 1988 and it completed in 1989.
And that was his start in relationship with DC Comics, which, wow, I read today, I was talking to Paul before we came on about Alamo because we all know it's a, you can be a bit of a dick when it comes down to his intellectual property being used for movies. And I read an interview, there was a telephone transcript of someone who literally just came out and asked him why. Why does it bother you so much? And he went on and I haven't got it written down.
I'm literally going from memory. He mentioned the fact that he had this relationship with DC Comics who said once the prints were finished, he could have his work back. And it was for him to do with what he wanted. The only thing is, and this is down to his or naivety, he never went out of print.
He kept on printing it. So they ended up keeping the rights, which then they could then sell on. And they did that for everything that he did with DC Comics. So they never stopped printing it because they knew that the minute they did, his agreement would be that he would tear his rights back.
And they never gave him the rights back. And they ended up selling them on. And it kind of left a bit of a bit of a taste in his mouth. However, he did have to swallow his tongue on a few occasions and he did have to kind of like, and he said he's very, he's very known for doing this on going back on his word.
He went back to work for them, knowing what they did and the whole thing started to begin. And that's what he said. Even more looks made appear bills. So yeah.
But he says that he's not even a tendency for causing such an uprising and then having to go, you know, if you're too able to bring your legs. I kind of actually need this job. Yeah, like I was reading over like the forward and stuff. Like that's in the sort of new additions and things like that.
And then like the way he talks is he acknowledges like his own sort of naiveties when he wrote this and stuff. And I'm like, I'm not really smart enough to go into like everything he said, but about like all the political sort of like every little thing. But it's refreshing to see a creator be like, I kind of like my idea was a bit half-baked on this. And I wasn't like, I was probably a bit angry when I wrote it.
And it's like I'm absolutely fine for people, more people to admit that they've changed the mind after a few years because like that's real. And it's called growth and it's been human. I read the comic before I watched the movie and I'd be down to back and actually remember the whole thing. Like my memory's shocking, but what really did stick with this is the organ.
It's on the front, it's like kind of like, it's the author's note to you on where he was at the time. And it describes, you know, the country that he's living in is in a Thatcher government. And what really sticks out to us is the conversations that were being had at the time around homosexuality. And that the, in what he believed was, and this is what he believed.
This is not essentially what ended up happening or a conversation that actually did happen. But what he believed from where he was in 1982 was that the government were gonna create concentration camps for gay homeless. Those were the victims, yeah. Yeah, that's where it led down to.
I had to go and do a bit of a deep reading into what the government's proposals were at the time. It's one, I mean, obviously, at the end of the 90s and the 90s, they did want to segregate to try and keep it because they didn't know how it spread. So it's a section 28, homosexual men couldn't disclose if they were homosexuals to anyone, especially around the teaching areas, so the concentration camps, I couldn't actually find anything on it. So all I think of is it's the kind of talk that was happening in the community.
It was probably, you know, how every now and then you'll hear some politicians say something like really, like some MP local MP or something really horrible. It was probably just something like that. I think they were using it behind like all fashion typing or funny, the wholesome family values or what they were called the English family or the American family. That was the thing where they said, oh, everyone should, and that was the kind of like the government at the time.
The word talks are bringing laws to outlaw homosexuality at the time as well. I think till I was at the 70s, it was illegal to be homosexual, the only, it'd be homosexual in the UK. I'm sure it was 70s, and I'm really sorry if I'm getting my data wrong. I don't think it's true.
A lot of people just still haven't moved on from that kind of thinking, which is the very far. The, the, the, the, I don't think it might be class propaganda, but the, what they used is kind of like campaign work against labor was all around, exactly, you know, if you want, if you want homosexuality than your workplace, and then you're going for it to labor, because that's what they want kind of thing. And it's like, oh my gosh. The history of threatening us with a good time.
Yeah, they really, really do. So that's kind of like it sets up. The whole opening sets up where he is mentally, yes, he is ready to write this. And also a part that like really hit home for me in that or forward is like, he's talking about, I'm thinking of moving.
And like, he's like, my wife here thinks this company's like cold and mean. And it's like, yeah, I think we've probably all had, had those thoughts before, like, you know, like times, which is after he was already doing it. Yeah, but we go in, where you go somewhere else that has, you know, the same kind of problems, which is not where we go. Or like to say in the movie, do you stay and try and fight and improve it?
Like, because that's what, that's what her parents sort of have an argument about. It's really cool that he was like, writing himself into some of the roles for you. And that's all I really love that. Yeah, and in a way, we do kind of like, not to the degree that, like I said, fight, good fight, but we try and do the best that kind of like nerdy of North.
Like keeping like, people to people's agendas or keeping people's like, rights and freedoms and also like safety aware, because we want people to be themselves and not have to like, follow what the norm is or not have to be worried about seeing something or like, even though I know it sounds way too extreme, seeing it with how people have came out like for the first time in the group, like letting them know that was not about their sex or all these. And it's been like their first kind of touching points. That's, to me, it's always kind of like, I will say it and well, this movie as well, this is why I think it is so important because the movement that is happening, like, actually, not like, like still happens in the UK, but in America at the moment, where like, states are trying out a lot of things like trans rights and like, gay people's rights, it's absolutely mind-boggling that way. As you said, it's 2024.
And we're still fighting the same fights that people have been fighting for the last nearly 100 years, that's crazy. You know, in like, in retrospect, knowing that the Wukowski's were making this, that has gotten up in at the forefront of their minds at the time, like this kind of, because this was like 2005. So yeah, it's not Thatcher's written anymore. But as you were saying Paul, like the cycle has like had started to come back around that time.
And for people who are going through their own kind of, like, you know, discovery phase, like this must have been like really important for them to get out into the world. And it's like, it's amazing that it, I'm still kind of shocked it got made. Like when you think about it. Yeah, I think a lot of people are.
In 2005, yeah. Like the reviews of it are very hit and miss. A lot of people said it shouldn't have been made. It's too much.
And it kind of could be too real kind of thing. Maybe this is not what we need in the cinemas, or Natalie Paulman's a really shit actress. And I'm going off the review. I'll go with that one.
That was my takeaway of this. It's not the importance. Should not play that role. Did you guys like this when it first came out?
Like as in the first time you saw the movie. Yeah, I was a big fan. Like say I'm anything Alan Moore, touches I've like kind of looking at. And again, as a comic book nerd, I had the original comics for many years till I saw them on the one cause they went from press and I'm a greedy bastard as well.
So yeah, commercialism. And because I think I wasn't in a very good political mind, when this came out. And I think the marketing was also weird because they were marketing as like, oh, this guy's like a cool matrix knife fighter. It's like, that's not really what the movie's about.
No, it's not. It's very heavy. I mean, the whole story is it's a revenge story. And it's really heavily influenced by the amount of the amount of money crystal.
Which I'm not saying it's about this. No, no, because the whole sword fighting and I'm sure the film's played over and over again in the background. But it's completely, I'm completely gone. I'm not playing this on the call.
I think I was talking about how it was presented. And like I think at the time, I didn't really get the gravity of the whole, like I wouldn't have been able to make the links back to like real life as I was probably like, still in with my parents. So like, you know, politics doesn't really hit you until you move out of your home. Yeah, no.
It's still never really hit me properly. Like as a 41 year old, I am sore. My sister is the political one and not me. And only because I don't understand half the shit that it goes on.
So when I was watching this today, I was like, this is why I've done a lot of deep reading because I wanted to make sure I understood it. Yeah. And this is because I've read the comic and that is very much your Thatcher's Britain. And I know as an ordinary, what kind of effect that just Britain had on communities.
And for this is very, you know, I was saying to Paul, this is very heavily influenced and obviously as American writers. And it's aimed at George Bush. It's more American politics than it is British politics. It was at the time, but we've actually be tipped over in 2024 into this kind of politics pretty much.
It's kind of like a very, again, to answer JX question I asked earlier, how this film got made. It's simply because of the marketing about this film from his god release. Cause it was marvelloured as the comic book lyrics movie. Like, that's like the premise.
Oh, it's a comic book movie. I mean, it's like, guys, it's like, there's knife play, there's gun play. And I was like, all right, then, it sounds really interesting. So the jaw public that went in to say it wasn't switched on.
So you'll get in like these meshes that probably went over a lot of people's heads. Me as a comic book fan and like say, no one like the backstory of this movie, I went in, I was all new exactly what to expect. Yeah. That's why it was going to be powerful and dark.
And yeah. Yeah. And again, I'm not trying to bash her too much. Cause again, you can't snare someone to do the best performance you can when you're doing casting the role.
Now, it's Paul and character does side track you from a lot of the stuff. One, what's your scene? Two, how's she got her personality? And three, please react to these news that you're getting back should be showing you instead of this one.
Oh, no. It's, it really did really throw me the whole accent thing because I think it starts out okay. And then it drifts into like cockney child. Yeah, this is a little bit of a guy elect doesn't stay the same.
And to be honest, even you could have had any one to be honest. I mean, that's said earlier, here and nightly, if we're going to go down British actresses who have a posh accent. Well, I think like, it could have been anyone. Well, you know, I don't think they even needed to do much with an accent.
Just have it be like generic movie English person because like they're in London, like there's some million different accents. Multicultural, yeah. Yeah. The only thing that would probably be the reason why they couldn't have an American is because Americans at this time was wiped out.
Yeah, yeah. So that's probably where they didn't book again. Yeah, but I just mean, like, I think there's like, easier accents because even her like had me voice would have been fine in this role. It would have been fine with better dialogue.
But that's the thing though, because the dialogue, if you read what she's saying or like the conversation's happened, it's a powerful conversation like the end scene. Again, another drumman when she's in the train and they're having the conversation with her and the presence of that. That's a moment and it kind of doesn't get the gravity because you like, stop sounding like Dick Van Dyke for one second. And then the moment on top when they're watching Parliament Blauber's like, this should be breathtaking.
You should be getting goosebumps, but you just want her a bit to be over and just to go back to seeing the ground. So I'm just like. Do you see anyone else but her? And Jonathan Ross wrote a review on this where he ripped Natalie Portman apart.
And it was something, I said it properly earlier and I'm probably not gonna see it again twice, but it was along the lines of she, if she, her gawpen was far worse than her accent. Just keep your mouth shut. But I was saying to Paul that probably doing the accent took so much work for her that she thought that you forgot how to act. Yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at.
Like if you force people to put on her voice, they can't always act as well as they could for like a lot of relax. One thing to just be out there was crying for sure. Yes, then. In the crying scene I was like, oh yeah, this is hidden.
When she's in that prison and she's like big massive tears coming out. But just do what Kevin Costner did. Just stick to your accent and just go, what's your problem? I'm Robin Hirsch.
Look at that. I know we can accept this book. Interesting because I know when we announced what we were doing in Midnight Mass, GX and there's a message saying, I'm like, you're going to do it with the most amount of monologues ever. Yes.
This is probably some movie with the monologues. Like that's all we're throwing. And I know Chris said in the chat. So again, with my stuff and everything, this is going to be a nightmare.
So I'm going to try and do it. Oh, no, you're going to say the V thing. I'm going to try and do it best. I'm going to put you in ASO.
So this is going to be either hilarious or they'll come up with me as a little bit. Because I think, as a doing V for the vendor, one of us has to at least try it. And I'm going to give it to you after that. Viola, in view, a humble board, billion veteran cast by the factory coarserie, as well victim and villain by the vistitudes of fate.
This visage, normally a veneer of vanity, is a vis stitch of box poly, now vacant, vanished. However, this valuous vis stitch of a bygone vexation, sandalit, vilified, and has vowed to vanishes the vendor, Vennel and virulent, burning, vanguarding, vice and vous saffing, a la la la la la. The violence and vicious and ferocious violation of the relation. The only verdict is vengeance.
Vendetta held as a boredom, not in vain, for the value and verricate vericity of such shall one day vindicate the verligence of the virtuous, verily and viscosity of vericage, vias more of the boss. So let's simply add that is very good humor, very good honor, I've got a humor on to meet you. And you may call me V. Bravo.
There was a section in there where you were literally felt like it was just rolling off your tongue. And then you stopped and I was like, no! Honestly, like Hugo, even like how the hell did he like put that one out there into the world? Hugo, even, he's an actor's actor.
And even though he's a whole movie with his face not being shown, you can feel every expression coming from his voice. And when I read some of the show, and I said it was because he literally would have the mask on the whole time. They were very clever in the lighting that they used to kind of distinguish his emotions. And I was like, that was tricking us.
Yeah, I heard like, it was certainly, you wouldn't cause obviously he had the smite permanent smile. You wouldn't see that if he was up and sad. He would just see his eyes. And it was very clever how they used the lighting on his face.
I didn't notice a couple of moments. Like I totally, in a way, I kind of forgot the mask was there. If that makes sense. Because like you say, you could hear it in his voice.
And just like the head movements and like how if the camera was like close up, like the conveyor and like, oh, it's like a sad moment. It's very interesting, especially since we're in the time of Marvel and they just rip the helmets off every character. Yeah, nobody attempted to leave in that late moment. There was one thing I didn't know.
Yeah, I just want to say that the mask was beautiful. Cause like the design wise, we've had a lot of masks in a lot of movies. Like I know I'm not the biggest mask fan of Spider-Man with the Green Goblin. I have my issues.
Yeah. I would have been upset if they went for a rubber mask with this one. Like cause people wanted to like, said why cast someone with Hugo or even like rearrange with facial expressions and stuff and put them behind a mask. But if you had it any other way, if you had any movement or any kind of the beat that wouldn't have looked right, it wouldn't have had the same thing.
It would have been so cartoonish that it would have actually been funny. Yeah. Yeah. Well, it's interesting because I was thinking about this when I was re-watching it.
That the first time when I watched the movie, I think I remember like the policeman in the movie wanting to see what's behind his mask. And this time I had like no desire cause I was like actually following the story properly. And I was like, it's not important in the slightest to see anything about what he looks like. Like, which is really interesting because usually in movies, if there's a mask character, it gets like pulled off at some point.
You know, if that's the point of like, I mean, maybe it doesn't happen like Michael Myers, but maybe every now and then it does pop up. And then he. Yeah. I think that's why, you know, in horror, we don't really expect that to happen.
So often like we're not bothered about what's underneath the mask. It always ruins it, doesn't it? Like when you see like Jason's stupid like bird zombie hair, do you like, oh, that's worse than what I thought. You're like, what was in my mind?
Yeah. The hockey mask back on, it's not worth it. Also, I just want to give a shout out. I bought physical media to watch this.
The government can't take my V for a day away from me. How much did you pay for the physical media? One pound 50. One pound 50.
It's a sucky bus, do my pretty kiss. The price of the box pop up popular, whatever that means. I thought he was actually talking when we went to Mumbai. I thought he was taking the piss.
No, I actually didn't need it. Yeah, yeah, definitely didn't have it. I might have had a copy of this back in the day, because 2005 was like prime, copy DVD. Yeah, I think these, yeah.
And what I was going to say earlier is what I don't particularly like about Evie and V's relationship is she almost makes it, she almost romanticizes it. And that's how I remember Evie, because she was being trained to be a pro, like she was his prodigy. She was being trained to take over from him. That's what I remember.
And then she kind of in the movie, it's very, she almost romanticizes the idea between the two of them. It kind of gives me impression of like that tall thing with what to say about her when you held captive for so long. Oh, stop once in trouble. And then look with the cat, like the person is calling.
Yeah, it was interesting though, because the part where she comes out of the prison cell and then leaves, he does break down and like smash the mirror. So I was like, is he the one who's actually got the romance in his mind? Because then at the end, like yes, she did kiss them, but also said was like we could run away. Like it didn't feel like that was sort of coming onto it.
It was more like, oh, let's not die. Let's like stick together on this. And we can fight the next fight sort of thing. But yeah, I was like interested in how you guys read that part where he smashes the mirror and like actually gets angry at your leaves.
Because I wasn't sure, like is this like a father and son or a father and daughter or work colleague type of thing? Is he mad? Because he spends so much time training. Yeah, and he kind of like he got it to a point of where he needed it to be.
The fear is gone. And now she's just going to go up on her own and everything that I had planned afterwards is now with it as a bit of frustration. But then also he was like, I've never listened to all this music and I've never danced to it. Like so he was definitely reaching out for some kind of like human connection.
But I couldn't tell, I guess maybe the leave it for us to decide. I couldn't tell if he was like, could I know. Poss for us. Because in the comic, there was like, this is where I think the writing in the comic or even in like say the movie and stuff like that was done brilliantly.
Because you could have went for the easy tropes or the easy kind of connections, which at times it was kind of hinted towards as well. Because when the talk about like what happened at the hospital and how Evie's brother had been affected and died because of the virus and stuff like that, I was like, when I was waiting, I was like, all right. And so he's connected to her in certain ways. Are they going to try and say, oh, Evie, I'm really your brother.
I'm really like a relative to her. And I thought they were going to go down that route, which would have been a very easy and like nor brain type of writing zoo. Well, they didn't. They kept up a little bit.
Where in the comic, you do get different fields from there, but it's more brother and sister, like family, then actually romantic size. Because even if someone's got great ideas, I know he can fall in love with someone's idea and mentally, but he was like, she won a new world. So I don't think romantically she would have went that route. But I think because it's Hollywood, I don't know one of this in the movie, it went a bit more romantic.
But I think the kiss is fine though, I think. Because like he's covered up, he doesn't have any skin left. So like if you want to give any human connection, like affection, like whether or not it's like friendly or brotherly or like, you know, romantic, like I think that was the way to do it. Just that quick thing, then it's over.
And we move on. We don't have to talk about it. Yeah. But now that's interesting to hear in some of the comics, I think, because that was one thing that impressed me.
They never go for the easy trope. Because what you were saying about the sort of backstory, because that was my thinking, I was like, oh yeah, he's probably going to know all about her parents. And that's why he kicked her. And it's like, no, he doesn't know who she is.
It's just, it's like the sort of the dominant effect that they kind of get into, like, nothing's a coincidence. Things happen for a reason. And yeah, like I really like that how it wasn't like, I knew your parents very well, type of thing, you know what I mean? We have no connection whatsoever.
The dominoes that fall down were beautifully done by professional dominoes, three-downers. I don't know that exact job title, but there's over 220,000 pieces there. It was shot four times to where they had to literally put them all back up individually and then drop them all back down again. They must have their patience of their fucking scene.
Oh yeah. Just not just about the dominoes, but the visuals in this movie. Like everything is just, like, it's where you're watching is mesmerizing. Which is funny when I say that, because when you look at the marketing and stuff, the marketing for this movie was very bleak.
It was very one-dimensional. But when you say the movie, the aspects to it, like the colors, like, because you don't think of it as a very colorful movie, but the richness and the reds and the roars and like, how, when the fire kicks off at the hospital, like how like roaring and bright and everything. And then the color. It's interesting actually, I just kind of thought, like the red and black color scheme is sort of like these.
But it's also like the evil governments color scheme as well, which usually, usually in like superhero stuff, you would have like opposing sort of like, you know, colors to make it like totally obvious. I guess you don't really know if he is a good guy. Like, I personally think he's good, but you know, he does murder folks. It's a different because the idea he comes up with to change government or change what's happening.
It's not a bad idea. It's just when you hear about his motives, it's because of what's happening. He admits it's because of what happened that he's basically lashing out and taking out the people that did that to him and the people that we knew and the girl in the cell next to him because we got the message, which is one of the most beautifully- I love that more. It's like, it's better than any love story that we've had in most movies.
And it's only like what a five minutes, like, sorry? And it's just, rethically done. It's pierced perfectly. And it's one of the things where it gives you hope because you want them to be at the end.
But you know, there's no happy ending. So it's good. Especially not when you start seeing the laboratory connections. Because you did see that character before.
I'm just so glad that we didn't get to see her the love of her life getting chucked into her band. I'm glad we didn't get to see that far because that would have absolutely brought me. It's interesting as well because like the EV character goes through the same, like thinking that we are. Because I was definitely thinking like, okay, well, this whole thing was fake.
So like, was she real? And then like, you know, you get like, it's like, it's interesting how to play with that way. You're like, well, maybe it isn't. Then like actually explain.
Yeah, she is. But this is this whole film at a point as well. Because it makes you think, you know, I have to witness what the tongue is. Or is it a propaganda movie at the end of the day as well?
Because we get the scene at the end where these describing what's going to be happening. No, not these are the detective, the place the detective describing what he thinks is going to happen. He's like, it's going to take one moment or one mistake because people are scared. And it's one of the, like the people that work for the government shoots a little girl when they're sick.
And then the poor little girl that we've seen in the house a lot of times, like watching the TV instead. So you're kind of feeling like the crowd. You're getting like, up round. You're getting angry.
You're feeling like that. I've met him coming up with you. And then you can see what happens to Stephen Frye as character, which is just absolutely brutal and quite telling like, so again, he's only in it for a short while, but it's so interesting and so like cleverly done. And then you have the whole Benny Hill sketch, which is weird.
But I think that was his way of like, yeah, but it's funny way of having the cabinet. Yeah, but at the end, when we get absolutely the amazing march of all the people, like in the outfits going against, like the sort of stuff, but then when you see the fireworks and the take the mask off, you see the little girl. You see everyone just, and all, but that's why I think you make up your mind. Is it true?
Was it just because Evie said the lines, he is everyone, he is us. And that's what I was thinking. That's what I was thinking, whether the mask were coming up and I was seeing everyone around who had just perished was now standing in front of us taking a mask off. And then she's giving them lines and like, oh, he's an idea.
