Nerys's Story
from Blocked Britain · host Blocked Britain
In Portsmouth North, 29-year-old Nerys wanted to train as a nurse to serve her local NHS. She had the qualifications, the motivation, and her community desperately needed healthcare workers. But when she applied for training places, she hit a wall that had nothing to do with her abilities. Health Education England's budget had been constrained by Treasury spending limits that treat public investment as a cost to be minimised, rather than as the means by which trained nurses reach the wards that need them. The training capacity existed. The people who wanted to fill those places existed. What was missing was a central government willing to fund them. This episode explores how Westminster's fiscal choices blocked Nerys from the NHS career she sought. Produced independently without sponsorship or commercial influence.
