Die dreidimensionale Erfassung von Gebäuden und anderen Objekten in OpenStreetMap ist eine der komplexeren Aufgaben für Mapper. Neue Werkzeuge machen das 3D-Mapping zugänglicher und effizienter. Für OpenStreetMap gibt es inzwischen seit Jahren freie 3D-Renderer wie OSM2World, OSM Buildings oder Streets GL. Diese Renderer sind aber auf einen entsprechenden Datenbestand angewiesen. Um solche Daten niedrigschwellig und in größerem Umfang zu erfassen, benötigt es geeignete Software. Zuletzt ist der Bestand an entsprechenden Hilfsmitteln um mehrere neue oder verbesserte Open-Source-Werkzeuge gewachsen. Dazu gehören insbesondere im Editor integrierte Vorschaufeatures, die neu erfasste oder geänderte Daten sofort in 3D sichtbar machen, aber auch automatische Datenprüfungen und weitere nützliche Tools.
