Monday, February 14 at Noon Neuropathy@CoreHealth is having an open house to review the latest improvements in the treatment of neuropathic pain. It is estimated that over 30 million Americans suffer from nerve pain outside the central nervous system. This is called peripheral neuropathy. Neuropathy is damage or dysfunction of one or more nerves that typically results in numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, and pain in the affected area. Neuropathies frequently start in your hands and feet, these are the regions furthest away from the heart.  We have found that decreased blood flow, poorly oxygenated blood, glucose dysregulation cause nerve damage that leads to neuropathic pain.Here are a few of the warning signs of neuropathy;Numbness or tingling in your hands or feet.Weakness in your arms or legs.Sharp, burning, or throbbing pain.Heightened sensitivity to touch or temperature.Inability to feel your feet and loss of balance.Night pain in the legs and hands.Who gets peripheral neuropathy?The primary population affected by neuropathy are diabetics and pre-diabetics. This is due to poor glucose regulation. The nerve covering can be destroyed in the presence of excess glucose in the blood. When this happens the nerve transmission slows down due to erosion of the myelin sheath. This is the cause of a tremendous amount of nerve pain. The next group to be affected by neuropathic pain are post-chemotherapy patients. The toxic chemicals used to kill cancer cells can erode the myelin sheath causing neuropathic pain. People who abuse alcohol are also at risk of developing peripheral neuropathy. Alcohol is a sugar and this eats away at the nerve causing pain as well.
