(NIV) 5 Consequences of Spiritual Amnesia 1. We stop obeying God’s commands and laws Deuteronomy 8:11 Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. (NIV) 2. We become proud Deuteronomy 8:12–14 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13  and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14  then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. (NIV) 3. We become ungrateful 4. We become complainers 1 Corinthians 10:10 And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel. (NIV) Philippians 2:14   Do everything without grumbling or arguing, (NIV) 5. We worship idols Exodus 32:3–4 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4  He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.” (NIV) The Cure for Spiritual Amnesia 1. Acknowledge the goodness of God James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (NIV) 2. Make a memorial so you remember the goodness of God Psalm 77:11 I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. (NIV) Deuteronomy 8:18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. (NIV) Joshua 4:21–23   Then Joshua said to the Israelites, “In the future your children will ask, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22  Then you can tell them, ‘This is where the Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ 23  For the LORD your God dried up the river right before your eyes, and he kept it dry until you were all across, just as he did at the Red Sea when he dried it up until we had all crossed over. (NLT) 3. Thank God daily for His goodness Psalm 9:1 I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. (NIV) 1 Thessalonians 5:18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (NIV) 4. Tell others about the goodness of God Deuteronomy 4:9 Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. (NIV) 5. Never stop celebrating the goodness of God A. You need to daily celebrate and praise God for His goodness in your life. Psalm 92:4   For you make me glad by your deeds, LORD; I sing for joy at what your hands have done. (NIV) Psalm 105:2 Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.
