Never Lock Your Doors - How L.L. Bean’s Story Can Boost Your Sales Strategy | CEO Sales Huddle with Che Brown

Have you ever had wet feet while hunting or fishing? Back in the early 1900s, there was a man named Leon Leonwood Bean, or L.L. for short, who faced this exact problem. He loved being outdoors, but every time he went hunting in the wet Maine woods, his feet would get soaked. Seeing the problem as an opportunity, L.L. created the famous Maine Hunting Shoe. This began the story of L.L. Bean, a company known today for its outdoor gear, reaching $1.6 billion in sales annually. Creating a new product isn’t easy, and L.L. encountered problems immediately. Although his first Maine Hunting Shoes seemed promising, they started falling apart, with 90 out of 100 pairs returned. But L.L. didn’t give up. Instead, he learned the importance of quality in business. Persisting through adversity, he discovered that improving the product and building customer trust were key to success. L.L. Bean’s solution was simple yet effective. He refunded unhappy customers and improved the boots’ durability. This gesture built trust and loyalty. Much like in sales leadership, consistency and quality are crucial. L.L.’s commitment to customer satisfaction was further demonstrated when he decided to keep the Freeport store open 24/7, 365 days a year, a tradition that began in 1951. This ensured that L.L. Bean was always available to meet customer needs, showing that accessibility and reliability can bolster sales success. My Big Takeaway - L.L. Bean’s story underscores the power of a robust sales system focused on quality and customer care. By keeping the Freeport store open all day every day, L.L. demonstrated true dedication to customer service—one that lasted through generations and was only paused for his funeral in 1967. This commitment became a hallmark of the brand. Stay Hungry. Stay Humble. Che Brown www.CEOSalesHuddle.com Connect with me: @IamCheBrown #CEOSalesHuddle #CEOSalesDashboard #CEOMasteryNetwork
