Welcome to the daily disciple podcast where we seek daily to be with and to become like Jesus our teacher Good morning everyone and welcome to the daily together on mission podcast. We're in the gospel of John We're doing daily meditations in the gospel of John and this morning We're gonna be in John chapter 12 Jesus anointed at his friend's house in Bethany and the title of the podcast this morning is nothing Wasted nothing poured out poured out on poured out for Jesus is wasted and And honestly if that's true, and I believe it is and I believe that's what John is saying in John chapter 12 If this is true, honestly, it helps me get through seasons in work in relationships Where it seems like I'm wasting a ton of time and a ton of energy because in that relationship or that endeavor or whatever It's just not going the way I want it to go. It's not working out the way I want it to work out and not seeing what I want to see and In our culture in my opinion We've been taught that if we don't get the results that we want to get than any time and energy we've spent on that is wasted I mean think about it relationship work Really any time we spend on anything if it doesn't work if it's not repaired if it doesn't flourish if it doesn't become what we want It to become then we have wasted time and of course in a culture where time is idolizer's nothing worse than wasting time Right and so then we think something like well Is it going to work because if it's not going to work right if this conversation or relationship or whatever is not going to work Then I'm not I'm not gonna spend any time on it if it's not gonna work because I don't want to waste my time I don't want to waste my energy and so it becomes all about will it work and will time be wasted? And is it practical and is it efficient and these aren't bad questions But I think that the world view that Jesus taught his disciples was quite different drastically different almost Antithetical opposite and I think the world view that Jesus taught his disciples went something like this Anything that you do unto the Lord is never ever wasted Even if it doesn't you know work even if it doesn't end up like you want it to end up if you do Whatever you do for the glory of God whether it works or not No time was wasted because you did it unto the Lord and to put it like John's gonna put it in just a moment Nothing poured out for Jesus is ever wasted money time energy resources Nothing poured out for Jesus is ever wasted and that's what Jesus taught us a cycle So let's ponder that for a minute You know that the time that we're spending on all the stuff that we're spending time on If nothing that is done unto the Lord is ever wasted that means that we don't ever have to waste another moment of time Or another bit of energy ever again as long as everything that we do is done unto the Lord as long as it's poured out at the feet of Jesus So John chapter 12 Verse 2 here at dinner and the dinner was given in Jesus's honor Mary served while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him Then Mary the younger sister took out a pint of pure nard an expensive perfume She poured it out on Jesus's feet and she wiped his feet with her hair and house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume But one of his disciples Judas Iscariot who was later to betray him objected Why wasn't this perfume sold in the money given to the poor it was worth like a year's worth of wages?
Verse 7 leave her alone Jesus replied It was intended that she should use this perfume for the day of my burial You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me now. That's a that's a story it's an amazing story and Jesus is saying to Mary to Judas to everyone who's listening nothing poured out on or for Jesus is ever wasted ever And Judas of course and I think Judas was just saying what other people around the table were thinking There could have been a more efficient use for this money. It could have produced more results This is a waste You know what a waste it could have been you know put to work for the cause to bless people that are hungry What a waste in Jesus in essence is saying that nothing even it seems like it's wasted Nothing that is poured out for him is ever wasted So and this is where it really counts think about the areas in your life where you're worried that you're wasting time Or you're frustrated because things aren't working out the way that you want them to work out or it doesn't seem like the conversation is working Or the relationship is being mended or the endeavor is you know moving forward and here's the question Are you doing whatever you're doing unto the Lord? That's the question because if you are if Mary in this chapter is then nothing that she is doing nothing that she's saying No resource that she's you know using energy that she's expending can ever be wasted if it's done unto the Lord And so the commission then from Jesus to Mary is pour it out go for it, right?
Seek to restore to rebuild to be generous to go to spend time to spend energy to To do it again to return good for evil to continue to work on that problem They can do to love that person whatever it is don't ask will it work? Don't ask will it be a waste of time? What we're to ask is is it under the Lord and am I doing it under the Lord am I pouring out my energy and time and money for you know the glory of God and And I was just about to end the podcast, but I just have to say this I think that will also find that when we're doing whatever we're doing unto the Lord and We know that no time is being wasted We're also going to be okay if we're not recognized for what we're doing because it's under the Lord So recognition is nice, but we don't have to be recognized We're also going to be okay if we're not complimented because it's unto the Lord now being complimented is great But we're gonna be okay if we're not complimenting we're gonna be okay Even if others are not helping even those that should be helping because if it's un to the Lord We're gonna be okay if we have to go it alone for a season We're gonna be okay even if others are against us if others are opposing us We're gonna be okay because we're doing it unto the Lord in not one split second nor one ounce of energy is wasted because nothing poured out For Jesus is ever wasted.
