New Interim Superintendent Takes Charge

Hazlehurst City School District taps Nonya Thrasher as interim superintendent amid urgent accreditation woes, replacing outgoing leader Cloyd Garth Jr. with no official reason given for his departure. Thrasher, already serving as director of accountability, brings hands-on experience fixing violations and previously led Claiborne County Schools as interim superintendent. Paul Rhodes, newly appointed interim board chair, stresses the need for swift corrective action as the district faces a December deadline to resolve critical issues including incomplete records, special education gaps, and aging facilities. State officials and Rep. Greg Holloway back Thrasher’s leadership, hoping she can restore pride and ensure students receive a quality education before potential state takeover.
