New Major Prepares Future First Responders | Montpelier News

St. Michael’s College is launching a bold new major this fall—emergency services—where students don’t just study theory, they save lives. Blending hands-on EMT, fire science, and wilderness medicine with liberal arts, the program trains responders who master technical skills AND understand human crisis. Specializations include EMS, fire science, or emergency management, with labs already in full swing—some skills, like taking blood pressure, feel like juggling two tasks at once. Students love it: one transfer student praised the immersive practice, another, already on campus fire squad, sees it as leveling up to serve better. With a regional shortage of emergency pros, this program aims to fill gaps by creating well-rounded, socially aware first responders ready for real-world challenges.
