New Monkey Species Discovered in Congo | Toronto News
from Toronto News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
Scientists in the Democratic Republic of Congo just unveiled a brand-new monkey species, Colobus congoensis—or Likweli to locals—featuring striking black fur and a salmon-pink muzzle, spotted only 114 times in dense high forests. Discovered after a decade-long hunt since its first blurry photo in 2008, this elusive primate is one of just five new African monkey species found in 75 years. Named by Congolese researcher Junior Amboko as a tribute to his homeland, it’s also honored with its indigenous name Likweli, given by the Balanga people. DNA, anatomy, and vocal analysis confirm its uniqueness—including a haunting “roaring” call that echoes more than it’s seen. The Mituku communities even dub it “kasaba nkoni,” or “the branch shaker.” This rare find underscores the Congo Basin’s untapped biodiversity and celebrates community-led conservation.
