New Rules for Italy's Electronic ID Card for Italian Citizens Living Abroad

Italy’s carta d’identità elettronica is becoming more accessible for Italian citizens living abroad, especially for those registered with AIRE outside the European Union. With new rules from June 1, 2026, eligible Italian citizens can request the electronic ID card through any comune in Italy, not only through their AIRE municipality or consulate. This change matters for dual citizens, Italian citizens abroad, and anyone replacing an old paper identity card before the August 2026 deadline. It also affects how citizens may use Italian identification for travel within Europe, public administration services, and practical life in Italy.
