New Study Reveals What a Tight Noseband Really Does to Your Horse!

Can a tight noseband shorten your horse’s stride and negatively affect performance? A 2025 study published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science found that increasing noseband tightness dramatically raised pressure on the horse’s face while reducing stride length. When researchers tightened the noseband from the recommended two-finger setting to a zero-finger fit, peak facial pressure increased by 338 percent. At the same time, the horses’ strides became an average of 11.1 percent shorter—approximately the length of a hoof disappearing from every stride.
