New World Screwworm Close To The United States Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller today is warning of a serious and immediate threat to the state’s livestock industry. The northern-most detection of the New World screwworm has now been confirmed in Nuevo León, Mexico — just 90 miles from the U.S. border. Miller says this is no distant concern. MILLER: “The New World screwworm is a direct and imminent threat to Texas, and we are treating it that way. This is a high-stakes situation for our ranchers, our livestock industry, and our food supply.” While federal agencies have responded, Miller says the pest’s spread has not yet been contained — and that raises concern. MILLER: “That’s exactly why Texas must be proactive. We are fully engaged and prepared to use every available tool to stop this threat.” He’s urging all Texas producers to act now. MILLER: “Be on high alert. Check your animals. Know the signs. If you see anything unusual, report it immediately. Early detection is the difference between containment and a full-blown crisis.” State leaders say they’re coordinating with federal, state, and local partners — but more action is needed at the source. MILLER: “Texas has defeated screwworm before, and we will do it again — but it takes urgency and immediate action.” For more information on detection, prevention, and reporting, visit Screwworm dot gov.
