New York needs more volunteer firefighters. What can be done?

There’s a shortage of volunteer firefighters across New York state. This week, the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) called on Albany to help with recruitment. The association says volunteer firefighters respond to 75 to 80 percent of all emergency and fire calls in the state. And volunteers save taxpayers 3.8 billion dollars per year. Host Pascal Hogue spoke with John D’Alessandro, the Secretary of the FASNY and an active firefighter in Saratoga county, about what the state can do to address the shortage.
