New York Weather: 02-22-2026

from The New York Weather Podcast

Good evening! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the New York Weather Podcast. It's Sunday, February 22nd. And folks, a Nor'easter is bearing down on us right now. Light snow is already falling across the state. But what's coming tonight? That's a whole different animal. A rapidly intensifying low is tracking up the coast. And by this evening, snowfall rates hit one to two inches per hour. The wind kicks in from the northeast at 20 to 35 miles an hour, gusts screaming to 48. Visibility drops to a quarter mile. This is a full blown blizzard. The city takes the hardest hit. You're looking at 14 to 20 inches by the time this wraps up Monday. Wind chills plunge to 13 degrees overnight with a low near 29. Your trash cans are going airborne. If you're in the five boroughs, you'll want to stay put tonight and through Monday morning. Travel goes from difficult to impossible. Push north to the Capital Region and the snow is lighter but still significant. Two to four inches tonight, another three to five Monday. Gusts reach 35 miles an hour up there, enough to create whiteout conditions on the Thruway. Over in Western New York, you're catching the tail end. One to three inches tonight, similar Monday. But here's the twist. Lake effect kicks in Tuesday morning and could tack on another two to four inches. Central New York starts as a rain snow mix this afternoon before flipping to all snow overnight. Coastal flooding is the other headline. One and a half to three feet of inundation in vulnerable spots. That's enough to swallow roads near the waterfront. Now the week ahead. Tuesday gives you a brief exhale. Partly sunny, low 30s. Wednesday sneaks in more light snow. Thursday? Another system is lurking, possibly rain and snow mixed, highs near 40 degrees. Friday calms down. Saturday gets unsettled again. Charge your phones tonight. Fill a thermos. If the power flickers, you'll be glad you did. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow. Take care!
