New York Weather: 02-22-2026

from The New York Weather Podcast

Good morning! I'm Aaron Jolly, and welcome to the New York Weather Podcast. It's Sunday, February 22nd, and folks, this is the big one. A monster nor'easter is barreling toward us right now. By midnight it becomes a bomb cyclone, dropping 40 millibars in 24 hours. That's not a weather term you hear every day. It means this storm means business. Right now you're sitting at 35 degrees under gray skies. Enjoy the calm. It won't last. Light snow creeps into the Capital Region and Central New York around 3 PM. The city stays dry until about 5. That's your window. Use it. Get your groceries. Move your car. Charge everything. Then the storm explodes. By 7 PM, the city gets hammered with 2 to 3 inches per hour. Northeast winds scream at 24 to 38 miles an hour, gusting to 49 after midnight. You're waking up Monday to 14 to 20 inches of fresh snow. Some spots could hit 2 feet. Head up to Albany and snow intensifies by 6 PM. Expect 4 to 8 inches with north wind gusts to 30 miles an hour. Wind chills crash to 14 degrees overnight. Over in Syracuse, 3 to 6 inches pile up, heavier south of I 90. And out in Buffalo, lake enhanced bands dump 3 to 5 inches in the city, but the Chautauqua Ridge could see 7 plus. Monday morning is the danger zone. Whiteout conditions. Wind gusts to 60 miles an hour on Long Island. Coastal flooding of 1 to 3 feet hits vulnerable areas around 5 AM. Don't drive Monday morning unless you absolutely must. Looking at the week ahead, Tuesday brings arctic air with highs barely reaching the mid 20s. A clipper drops a dusting Tuesday night. Wednesday warms briefly to the low 40s with a rain snow mix. Another system rolls in Thursday. But Saturday? Highs near 45 degrees and partly sunny. Perfect for finally digging out. One quick thing. If this podcast helps you plan your week, share it with someone who needs it. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow. Take care, and please, stay off the roads tonight.
