New York Weather: 02-22-2026

from The New York Weather Podcast

Good afternoon! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the New York Weather Podcast. It's Sunday, February 22nd. And folks, I'm not going to sugarcoat this. A historic blizzard is bearing down on us right now. That light dusting from this morning? Forget it. A monster nor'easter is exploding off the Carolina coast as we speak. By tonight, you're looking at whiteout conditions across most of the state. We're talking snowfall measured in feet. Not inches. Feet. Snow turns heavy by mid afternoon in the city. By 3 PM, it's all thick, wet snow with highs near 38 degrees that nosedive fast. Then tonight gets truly dangerous. Blizzard warnings are up for nearly the entire state. Snowfall rates hit 2 to 3 inches per hour. Gusts along the coast scream to 55 miles an hour. The city and Long Island? 14 to 20 inches total. Drifts of 3 to 4 feet will bury roads. Wind chills drop to 16 degrees. Drive up the Thruway toward Albany and you're seeing 4 to 8 inches. Locally 10 in the Helderbergs. Gusts to 35 miles an hour. Lows crash to 14 degrees. Out in Buffalo and Rochester, lake enhanced snow piles on 6 to 11 inches total near Lake Erie. Syracuse picks up 4 to 9 inches with lows plunging to 12 degrees and wind chills near zero Monday. Coastal flooding compounds the nightmare tonight. Storm surge of 2 to 3 feet hits Long Island Sound during high tide. Move vehicles to higher ground now. Here's the thing. Don't travel tonight or Monday morning. Roads will be impassable. Power outages are likely along the coast. And if you're shoveling two feet of concrete snow, take breaks. This is genuinely dangerous. The cold locks in Tuesday with highs stuck in the 20s. A clipper drops another few inches Wednesday. Then finally, a thaw pushes us toward 40 degrees by the weekend. Charge your phones. Fill your bathtubs. Check on your neighbors tonight. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.
