Settled in 1635 as part of Newberry Plantation, it is located on the southern bank of the Merrimack River where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. A once bustling port, it was part of the triangular trade system, importing West Indian molasses and exporting rum made in distilleries located around Market Square.
