Newcastle Storms - 15 Jan 2025

from Matty Morris · host NEWFM

NSW was rocked by fierce rain and winds overnight, with over 300,000 lightning strikes recorded in the state.  Thousands are without power, and a man has lost his life in Cowra after a tree fell onto his car.  The SES received over 3000 calls for help, and local resident Nik from Raymond Terrace’s home was damaged by the weather.  Powerlines were brought down across Newcastle, including on Maitland Road at Sandgate. It’s estimated 113,000 homes lost power at the storms peak.  Wind gusts of up to 120 km/h were recorded by BOM at Nobbys Lighthouse.  Local Member Sonia Hornery has warned Wallsend residents living in the vicinity of storm water drains to remain alert.  Newcastle residents are advised to download the ‘Hazards Near Me,’ app, and to call 132 500 for SES, and Triple Zero (000) for life threatening emergencies.  We reached out to Newcastle Police for comment, they declined to assist. We also made contact with the police media team who advised they would not assist with weather/traffic events. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
