Starting last week, smoke from the Tatlanika Fire has drifted into the Fairbanks area, periodically affecting air quality in the region. Building materials that contain asbestos will no longer be accepted at the Central Transfer Station in Midtown Anchorage, according to Solid Waste Services Director Kelli Toth. Toth said asbestos, which is known to cause long-term health issues including cancer, has technically not been allowed at the Transfer Station previously but it was a rule which was never enforced. Alaska’s top election official is refusing to reactivate the voter registration of 3,000 people, including U.S. citizens. Lawmakers told her in a letter last week she was violating the law.
