NFL Franchise Tag Recap with Alex Bleuel

from The Big D Podcast

In this episode, Alex Bleuel and I recap the NFL's Franchise Tag period, which ended yesterday with eight players receiving the Franchise Tag. We first look at a pair of star receivers being tagged. First Green Bay Packers star Davante Adams received the tag capping a crazy day for GB after securing Aaron Rodgers to a $200-million contract. We both believe GB felt obligated to tag Adams after signing Rodgers. The tag keeps one of the NFL's best quarterback-receiver duos together in Green Bay. With Rodgers and Adams, the Packers can take one more chance at a Super Bowl. I also look in how GB spent money on its stars despite no singular owner. We also look at Tampa Bay Bucs receiver Chris Godwin receiving the tag for the second straight year. While his injuries made a long-term deal harder, we both think a healthy season could lead Godwin to a monster deal. We also look into whether Tom Brady would come out of retirement. Both of our teams franchised a key player, the Miami Dolphins tagged tight end Mike Gesicki while the Jacksonville Jaguars tagged tackle Cam Robinson. Alex is excited Miami kept Gesicki. He is a little worried Gesicki could be tagged as a wide receiver, which costs around $8 million more on the salary cap than the tight end position. Dylan then breaksdown the Jags tagging Robinson for the second straight year. I explain how this move likely means the Jags will draft Michigan's Aidan Hutchinson in next month's NFL Draft. We then look into a couple of surprises. I breakdown the surprise that the New Patriots did not franchise Immoaklee's J.C. Jackson. With 17 interceptions over his past two years, Jackson is one of the NFL's most exciting free agents. Alex then looks into the Cleveland Browns tagging tight end David Njoku. We conclude with three NFC South free agents, New Orleans Saints tackle Terron Armstead, NO safety Marcus Williams , and Falcons running back Cordarrelle Patterson.
