He qualified from King's College London in 1984 and practised in Birmingham for the majority of his career, latterly in orthodontics. He began in dental politics through his local dental committee, and in 2006 brought a judicial review against the Department of Health over the terms of the new NHS contract - funded largely by donations from the profession - winning at the High Court and again on appeal.
