Nicholas Nickleby Chapter 28

In which we witness the distressing predicament of a young lady beset by unwelcome attentions within a society more concerned with titles than decorum, and the strained entreaties she offers to a stern uncle for succour amidst these tribulations. We also observe the curious mixture of character and circumstance that binds those around her, from the affected invalid to the scheming gentlemen, all playing their part in a drama of social pretence and hidden suffering.
