Vernon Wallis was missing and was last seen on a night out with his friend Mr Burnett. He and Burnett had ended up in a run down gambling house run by a one legged soldier called Bill. Burnett told Nick Carter that Vernon had got into a card game with Bill and no matter what Bill did Vernon won. Burnett was afraid for him in a dive like that but Vernon told him to leave, which he did, but Vernon never arrived home.
