She completed her residency in family medicine and enhanced skills training in maternal and child health at McGill University. She maintains an active practice including addictions with a special interest in women, substance use and pregnancy in Northern Ontario. She is an author of over 100 peer-reviewed papers including papers related to substance use and pregnancy/breastfeeding. Her clinical, teaching and research interests include medical education, maternal/child health and populations experiencing health inequities.   About Barbara Smith Barbara Smith holds a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Victoria and a Master’s degree in Adult Education and Leadership. She is a social worker, educator, and systems-level leader with extensive experience in addiction, recovery, smoking cessation, and community-based program development. Barbara founded and led Prostitutes Education, Empowerment and Recovery Society (PEERS), supporting individuals and families impacted by addiction, trauma, sex work. Her work included extensive engagement with pregnant and parenting women who continued to use substances and smoke, with a focus on wellbeing and recovery pathways.
