Het was een enerverende race in Sotsji, waar Max Verstappen vanaf de laatste plek op de grid moest starten. De Nederlander werkte zich knap naar voren en finishte na een regenbui zelfs op de tweede plaats. Lewis Hamilton won de race, maar won daardoor slechts een minimale hoeveelheid punten op de Nederlander. Mercedes probeerde Valtteri Bottas nog in te zetten, maar deze was niet in staat om de Red Bull-coureur achter zich te houden. Uiteindelijk is het Red Bull dat de schade beperkt heeft gehouden en is niet Hamilton, maar Verstappen de grote winnaar na het Grand Prix-weekend in Rusland.
