Nigeria's Upcoming Election
from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa
Nigeria’s upcoming presidential election will be the country’s sixth since the end of military rule in May 1999. In November last year, the Independent National Electoral Commission said that a total of 73 political parties fielded candidates for the 2019 presidential election, but it is reported that the race is generally believed to be between the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president of the country of the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP’s). Some of the issues that are likely to drive this election are how the economy has been governed by Buhari and issues of security such as Boko Haram among other things. To help us unpack the discussion, we are joined on the line by:• Matthew Page, Chatham House’s Associate Fellow with the programme covering Nigeria • Dr Akinola Olojo who is a senior researcher in the Transnational Threats and International Crime Programme at the Institute for Security Studies • Dr Olayinka Ajala is an Associate lecturer at the University of York
