June 12 is World Day Against Child Labor • According to UN statistics in 2022, more than 200 million children worldwide are child laborers; 73 millions of these are under the age of 10 • 159 categories of goods (including manufacturing, mining, agriculture, etc) in 78 countries are known to use child labor • UNICEF says millions more are at risk, due to economic effects of COVID worldwide • Child labor affects the health and education welfare of the children, setting them up for a future of struggle and failure • According to the Department of Labor, the number of hazardous occupation violations regarding minors in the US has increased 94% since 2015 • In the US, typical violations include scheduling minors for night work, working too many hours, or placing minors in harmful environments • Several high-profile investigations involving child labor have been exposed over the past year, including the use of child labor in Hyundai and Kia supply chains in Alabama, at JBS meatpacking plants in Nebraska and Minnesota, and at fast-food chains including McDonald’s, Dunkin Donuts and Chipotle. CAUSES: Include extreme poverty, war, regional economic instability, natural disasters SOLUTIONS: Better economic support for families, increased focus on children’s education, universal child benefits. Keep up to date with information. Information is available online in reports published by the UN, UNICEF, and the US Department of Labor. Be an informed consumer. Tell your congressional representatives to support child protection laws. www.ilo.org / www.un.org / www.dol.gov ABOUT image.png NIGHAT SHAH FOUNDER OF ADUR PRODUCTIONS Impact Investor, Philanthropist, Producer, Humanitarian, TEDx Speaker Nighat Shah is an impact investor, philanthropist, and founder of Adur Productions.
