Niko: Speaking out against Racism in America today

Today Niko called in to share a very difficult conversation about his experiences with fear, racism and discrimination. Niko tells us about his earliest memory of racism that started when he was 9 years old and his mom was driving him home from a school function. Niko’s mother was pulled over by a police officer and what transpired that day shaped Niko’s would view of how people of color are treated differently than white people. He was scared for his safety and his mothers safety. This was not a lone happenstance. Niko recalls many experiences of racism that happened to him and his family over the years and followed him from community to community when he moved. He shares stories about overt explicit racism and more concealed micro aggressions that hurt. Kiko also talks about how hard it is to be accepted for his own sexuality and how even in his own community he feels shunned for his bisexuality. Niko shares positive thoughts for anyone who is struggling with their own fears and helpful resources for anyone who is experiencing depression and suicidal tendencies.
