NLA: Zim on "State vs U" Round 2 hoops, Matthew Mors, Augie-USF thriller, USA Hockey

from Happy Hour with John Gaskins · host John Gaskins

So, North Dakota State's men and women have clinched the No. 1 seed in the Summit League Tournament.    Does that take away the luster from Wednesday's women's showdown between the Bison and South Dakota State, or from both the men's and women's "State vs U" games between the Jackrabbits and Coyotes on Saturday?   Absolutely not, said veteran Summit League reporter Matt Zimmer, the Sioux Falls Live sports editor and co-host of the weekly "Nobody's Listening Anyway" podcast on "Happy Hour with John Gaskins."   And that's not just because Sioux Falls Live will be covering the crud out of all these games.   Over beers at the Gateway Lounge on a Tuesday afternoon, Zim and the host dig into the extra punch both SDSU teams have packed in recent games that make them look like more formidable contenders at the SLT next week.   And they really dig into the complicated college career of South Dakota's third-highest career high school scorer of all time.   Matthew Mors was a prodigy by the time he hit the game-winning shot in the state championship as a freshman at Yankton. He was on his way to the Big Ten to be a Wisconsin Badger. But he never hit the floor in Madison, transferred to SDSU and averaged 6.6 points per game the last four years.   On Senior Day, he poured in 18 points in an 18-point win over third-place North Dakota that boosted the Jacks' morale and confidence of making something extraordinary happen in a rather ordinary season (by record, not SDSU standards).   So, what do we make of all that? Both NLA hosts have covered Mors from the beginning and offer their thoughts on him and O'Gorman boys coach Derek Robey, who is winding down a prolific 41-year career and will be a Happy Hour guest later in the week.   The show ends with thoughts on USA's gold medal hockey victory and how it might impact both hockey participation and viewing.   But the episode begins with a look back on what turned out to be a bonkers "backyard battle" game and environment between Augustana and the University of Sioux Falls.   March Madness is a week away. February Fury is in full swing.
