Hey and we're live on the air everyone this is running Ross so strategy podcast com and Charles. Charles at fall of success for you so success for you. That is awesome man so we're here live at spreaker the spreaker booth an immediate expo in a B show and and your media expo in the mix. That's a hard to say.
We both had the VIP badges. That's awesome. Our speakers. What are you going to speak on?
Well you know I actually spoke yesterday and the stream was a stream thinking about Paris code. Don't cross the streams. So the talk yesterday was on borrowed influence so how podcasters and bloggers can expand their brands and stuff like that by aligning themselves with the guests that they actually have on their shows. Yeah right.
So it was interesting and I pretty much just kind of told my story from how I was able to build my brand over the past years. My podcast isn't that old. It's only roughly about 14 15 months old but I've had some amazing guests on people like Gary Vaynerchuk Chris. I'm not.
I'm not. Pat Flynn on and Jamie Tardy and folks like that and so and Andrew Warner from Mixer G so I've been able to build on that brand and those people. What about you? Well you're talking about brands.
I'm going to read from the sheet real quick because we do. I want to say thanks to spreaker for having us in the booth. You can visit spreaker.com. Please tweet using hashtag speaker live and of course you can have your own podcast show and stream live audio like this with spreaker.com.
Get a free month off. I love doing the reads right? But you know what? Rob was kind enough to have us.
I'm going to do it. You're free month off your first month of speaker podcast hosting and livestreaming plans by using promo code and MX 15. So we're going to know who we are. We're going to be awesome.
Right. So I did my panel this morning. It was on how to build a community that grows your influence and that you can monetize. Oh, that's interesting.
And we had a great room and we talked about Patreon. We talked about how you build your audience first. Talk about what we are talking about. We're talking about Patreon.
I'm actually doing TV show tomorrow on it. It's two o'clock. It's right around here. It's with the Black Magic filmmakers roadshow and they're doing stuff all over and I'm not even sure where the booth is.
They're still handling me over. Right. Right. Yeah, we talked about that.
We talked about strategies and about how to cross-road what that was always about. Let me ask you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Social strategy.
That's key. Yeah. Okay. Everybody says keep social media social.
But we talked about building that bad ass clubhouse. Everybody wants to be it. Yeah. So you never want to think of that.
Right. As talent, you have to be available to your audience, which is hard to do because with mothers having day jobs and everything. Actually, I don't anymore about that. Right.
How do you become accessible to your audience? What are you coaching people on for that? So you know, the funny thing is I still have a day job. So you know, the magic number and podcast and blogging and individual business is at six figure number.
Well, when you already have a six figure income or six figure. That's counting to two years after the dot. All right. If you know.
Right. When you have that plus income, it's like six plus, you can't just walk away from it for, you know, the passion of podcast and stuff like that. So you actually have to build that business. So I've been able to do that with sponsorship and coaching programs and other ways to monetize a community that I've built to serve them.
So the more ways I find to serve my community, the more ways I actually end up making money. I was a success, we call it help others to be awesome. Yeah. And we do community motivation.
Everything is about what you want to get out of life. We do focus on the young and upcoming entrepreneur. Right. But honestly, we talk about dating life, how to make your relationship work.
Because honestly, within a segment as human beings, we say, there's work, life, there's podcast, life, there's my dating marriage, romantic life, whatever. There's my personal life beyond that. And reality is how you treat work is how you treat your spouse and how you treat yourself. And if you give anything about podcasting, if you give first, that's how you get, you know, you get.
No, I would entirely agree with you. And the funny thing is that when you say that, the way that you treat your work is usually the way you treat your life. If you have a job that you don't like, that other people are going to start feeling the brunt of that, especially family and friends and stuff like that. Because it's hard to switch up those two energies where you're at some place that you're not satisfied with.
You can't stand and you can't just go home and be nice. You know, somebody's going to get kicked. Maybe the dog, maybe a wall, but it can bother you when you're doing that. That's awesome that you guys focus on that.
Well, what we found out too is winter, winter, winter, chicken dinner, right? So you go to work and you get irritated and you come home and you jump on your friend or your jump on your spouse. Yeah. I personally found my wife.
And so much energy in the starting. Well, I'd already done a podcast while with launching a podcast, right? And doing the day job. She literally said, if you would just, I'll actually phrase it.
Essentially, if I put just a little bit of the energy I put into our marriage, it'd have been better. And like, first of all, you know, at the time I coined the phrase for myself, I was like, I executive produced life. You know, if you have to, what do you do? What do you want me to do?
I executive, I'll see where you're going up. You're going up. I start doing that from the marriage. I think the first time I did it, I took her shot at a huge saver, huge couponer.
And she was having some difficulty with something. And I took her shopping list because she's a little, I'm going to get this, get that. I start going, did you need this? Did you need that?
And I start like I would have produced a show for somebody else. I started producing the shopping list. Right. She's like, don't try to produce me.
It's like you wanted my energy there. It is. That's awesome, man. You know, it's funny when I, I'm coaching people and it's, you know, I got certified as a coach.
I'm a social media strategy. So I had, we did a trade for service thing. So I got certified as a coach. Now, is that so it can be like perfect head of your head agree?
Did it actually teach you something? Well, they teach you the methods and how to recognize conflicts and how to help resolve conflicts, how to bring out questions and people like their life signal, right, right, right. You know, hold them accountable, dig deeper into the surface level stuff. So when you learn to have you get past a friend thing, no, no, no, this is my responsibility to my exactly.
So that stuff leads over into your marriage and we've been married 20 plus years. So, wow, congratulations. Thanks. No, it's good, man.
It's better than it ever has been. And you know, the funny thing is that you find yourself not getting as upset and coaching your way through situations with your wife or whoever and it can be funny and they realize that they're being coached. Wait a minute now. It just becomes part of who you are.
So, you know, that's funny. Yeah, exactly. I found myself, I heard you coach yourself. I found myself in a fight with my wife or something going, okay, now in the show I'm getting the fights in my co-hosts, not fight fights, but you know, it's like, okay, I am just going, what am I saying that you're not hearing?
Because instead of doing the fight, I'm like, I know what I'm saying is not wrong. I'm communicating and I start coaching myself. Oh, well, can you do it subconsciously at first? I'm going to realize that I was like, hey, this stuff works.
My show must be good. That's right, man. That's right. That's awesome.
I'm going to talk about building a community. What's some of the things you guys do for that? Yeah, I had five different people from five different walks of life. I thought about it.
So, I had to try to remember my parts of it. The first thing was just be open and honest and people, you're talking about what you're passionate about and talking about what you're talking about with your friend. I started in the early days of podcasting, like 2000, late 2004, right? It was just after it came out.
And I did wear it, right? I did a morning's new crew show, fake, whatever. It just didn't work. And I did another show.
It kind of worked, but then life happened and I needed to take it. When I came back, it's like, I'm just going to do it this way. And I said this time, nobody put out live names. Nobody put out where they were.
Nothing from trace back. Hey, God forbid you would have to get a post office box if you want something sent to you. I like stuff. This doesn't feel right to me.
So, I totally just went in and said, here's my name. Here's where I work. Here's my home address. If you want to send me stuff, I like stuff.
I like stuff. Send me stuff. And everybody freaked out. And nothing bad happened.
Even though I freaked out a little bit. This is right. So, that's part of what we're talking about in the community, when you... it's a four-year or a thing.
Podcasting is the kind of a four-year thing. So you don't want to be edutainment, you know, educated and entertained at same time. You really just want to see what's going on and, oh, this is what Vernon's doing today. Right.
And now you're either going to turn it into your show to get tips or to see who you are. Yeah. And that was never one thing I talked about. Yeah, you know, it's funny when I interviewed Andrew Warner, it turned into a, hey, let's talk to Andrew Warner about some stuff that I don't hear other people talking to him about.
Absolutely. That's awesome. He loved it because we got on this whole target fixation thing and it's true mind thing that he's doing, meditation and this whole new thing that he was going to be launching later on in the year, but it turned into an interview to him for him interviewing me. So we turned the interview around and just start picking apart my business.
And I started like digging in on, well, why haven't you done this? And what do you think stopping you? And it's like, oh my God, it was painful and sweating. And I mean, oh man, it was horrible.
I'm like, do I air this? Because not only was it audio, Andrew Warner likes to do video. So he's like, well, can you do video? And I'm like, sure, I guess.
Well, let me put on a shirt. No, but I'm not going to get the break. All right. So I mean, we ended up doing video.
So I mean, you can literally see me sweating on video. Yeah. And I'm just like, oh man, I don't know. What did you put it out to?
I put it out and it's one of the highest rated episodes. Absolutely. Being vulnerable and being real, so many people email me and contact me after. It was really cool to hear some of the struggles that you go through in your business.
Because it seems like your stuff is so together. And I'm like, oh yeah, it is a little bit. It's still together. But yeah, you have struggles and you should share this stuff.
And it's helped my community stronger. It's a human aspect. It's one thing. I'm sure you're kind of the same venue.
I'm sure you're familiar with Tony Robbins, right? Oh yeah. So it's one thing to watch Tony Robbins and get the information one way. Right.
But he's pretty much 99% of the people knew about him. He's just a student. Yeah. Which is very good.
I was just really honored. Very awesome and there was this great greatest show episode, where you could probably bring the top 80 of the first two season and I was just not really a series of years. But that's the biggest big show ever. The biggest show ever.
Right. And that was the biggest compliment ever got. I was a loud aspect of who it was, not everything that was in this particular show, but we did a meetup. And one of the newest listeners should come.
And they're very, very hesitant to come up and this night. The thing that came and the thing they told me after was, the biggest thing that I learned being there was with you what you see what you get. I was like, there was no change. I'm like, like, you're going to show and now you're somebody else want to meet you.
It was absolutely. your larger life and it's like yeah that's it wears down on my wife because I get that you get excited stop you're too loud and that's what I love about it and did you go to podcast words last night I didn't I didn't go to talk about words I'm a huge fan of Chris Jericho love them in wrestling love them in music I watched a more show last year year and a half ago called Golden Gods was about metal music and he hosted he was fantastic oh I know he hosted by himself and he was drinking heavily which is awesome and wait listen to me he was just improv and the fun and and all right takes what happened and he really pulled it back in and so I heard he's gonna host the worst I was excited and it was a whole different level is a much it didn't go I think the way they wanted it to go I don't think it did I went from going I'm really want to try to I'm gonna rub a stage and get up selfie with a make this big joke about it right I did have running on stage but I like but as I'm listening to this thing I kind of felt bad for it right when they lose the match yeah you don't want to go up and get their autograph after you feel bad for them so I didn't end up getting the picture and that's that key of well you're one way this way and here you're different I got the feeling that I'm personally he would have been that I'm sure I was to picture but I think he's going I know I just suck I did not get away I wanted it I need to go it kind of same that way yeah I just let them alone and that's right that's cute a community what we're talking about is right right you have to be real you have to put out all your business in the street that's actually what I started doing was putting my business on the street there was okay I can pull some stuff back well yeah yeah it'd be private and have some stuff but exactly but honestly build a brand on who you are right you talked about the messing things up and that's that's you're sweating that's my thing and all my shows like look the details aren't important the stores was important I forget names I'll screw up and it becomes a some daring thing that people are because I know I can be my researcher I'm gonna go to a paper to figure out what is this name and you're like looking at your battery just remind me right right right but if I messed it up I would just joke it off we'd laugh and we go because that you have to do that has one guess I got him Toby so got him and I've been knowing Toby for a while met him and he exposed last year hung out the whole entire time I talked to him a couple times on Skye and called him Tony okay during the intro instead of Toby except oh because Tony I mean I did this amazing intro he goes dude you did an amazing intro but then you flubbed it because you call me the wrong I'm like dude I so much know your name and we just he's like well you can edit it out I'm like no standing and then after stays in all of that same thing people after but it was another good rated episode that was that with success rates my partner who's gone to a panel thing but he'll do that he's like you can get that out as always no they sleep in the game and he's gonna stand in I did that interview with this guy been chasing for a while and in search circle at will not attack he's other the get the somebody got the one multiple wars I said right right he's the other co-host I went here his name is Justin Robert young everybody call some jury jr what but why sat down to finally get this interview with him and Brian Brushwood he was there right I had the squir and I had a little bit drink I'm like I'm with Justin Steven young he's like he's like he's not my day like you're drunk you know she's talking about it by the brush with you know Steven what do you talk about things like if you guys but then they just play with that I had just even young now and it because I totally just any kind of tag on everything I just bombed his name but that's okay no no you're drunk you don't know she's talking about this money man that's right and that's right to do right she made exactly that's fun no it's funny so um you know when you start talking about monetization yes that's every podcast I once know how do you monetize a podcast how do you guys make money with your show when you do the quick and dirty cause you're watching your thoughts yeah I know you mentioned patreon yeah okay real quick patreon is for the artist we are artists it's about creating content and you can do video you can do art you can do blogs whatever you're creating you set it up you promote it and it's like a patron of the arts people pledge and NPR style so I love what you do you want to be part of what you do here's whatever per episode if you put a lot of content you do it per month yeah the biggest greatest beautiful thing about patreon that I love is back in the day we did just donate yeah and they can subscribe then be promising it's like give you five dollars it's going to be five dollars every time that's your patreon you control what you can do so if you go I'm gonna get you five dollars in episode I can only do five dollars once a month that's what it'll do and it'll cut it off after that right or it'll tool it down to everyone do you have full control yeah over how you pledge and that once that came it opened up the community to where helping each other out right instead of going hey give me five bucks it's like your part of my community right right we'll call it the bad ass clubhouse we built that it's a Facebook group you have to donate ten cents to us ten cents per episode to us to get into her clubhouse it's not it keeps people out who who mess up your group right right you're in the group it's just so powerful and amazing it's really interesting so that's that's the major way that I like to monetize we talked about sponsorships how to approach that I forgot what's right for you we also talked about like you're doing you coach colliance yeah and you do a show right they're not necessarily the same thing I do just I just have a show make a little bit of money show but I don't have a day job I make my money being a technical producer for entrepreneur radio oh nice because of they met me through the show they met me at new media Expo and they pay me to do everything I do for my show other than talk that's awesome it is it is what I was talking about what you're gonna do it you do it you low exactly and you're not crappy at the end of the day because you're finished doing the crappy job you don't like charge more than you could get there next to your show I boom was that yeah so like well in three hours of working for them in my shorts and t-shirt you know playing a video game while they're doing stuff on the screen that's a win so that's that's that's it really else it comes down to be who you are yeah and attract the community oh a briney I go credit this a briney bit of cover bill who's funny hat guy for last night here's on the panel he said you don't get the community you want you get the community you deserve exactly you don't have a community you want change what you're doing I did that last part but the community you'll get community you want you get a community you deserve was young and I'll be honest at one point with one of my shows I'm sitting on looking at my audience going your losers I don't like you guys you're asking dumb questions I realized that's who I'm attracting that's where I was so I changed what I did all three lost most of the audience yeah but getting the audience I was wanted to be in right yeah you know the thing that I got from doing that very same thing is I heard the quote from Jim Rohn years ago that sure the average of the five people you spend the most time around I know John Lee Dumas from North Park people he says it all the time and I noticed as I start spending more time around these entrepreneurs I was interviewing how my game changed in the level of people that were listening to the show and contacting me in the level of clients which meant the level of income you start climbing so absolutely not an amazing thing to do you're very much in point to that I've always for this my third year in the media as well we start trying to speak from the very first year and just kind of had to find to what we're gonna do find a piece of panel that everybody wanted to hear it and that's what we did but we would come as attendees and what do we want out of this we want to meet new people yeah make connections that's what we got first year second year we want to become kind of bigger names so we went and we got a little more recognition we met the people that helped us do that so this year like what we do we're I don't know we're just gonna speak yeah we're gonna be us and in that we just want to panels that attracted us and tell about the five people we're still getting back to the point of the people you're starting stuff with just in this conference alone went to a panel met some amazing women yeah as the women in your media panel by the way oh yeah I missed that one my friends amazing so I said hey just happens we're doing our show this afternoon we want to interview each one of you and we talk about bigger better better more help others be awesome love your life and so they say yeah we'd love you on the show they're they were all amazing the family amazing us we went to lunch some of them just got away we got a set our table sat down on the table fast word to the end we're not hosting the red carpet awards red carpet for the I wtv awards tonight awesome that is crazy because and it's like it is a crazy that we're doing the awards and then we're gonna do the TV show tomorrow because we didn't go to them what can you do for us what yeah this small thing we knew about you that you're empowering women that you're empowering content creators you're giving let's have you talk about our show and that also we found out they're directing the awards and they love what we did and I think you guys do this so it is all about you know your friends yeah or meet new people and look for what you want right yeah that's that's awesome
