In which the Vanstone family departs for London on a mysterious errand, leaving the sisters Norah and Magdalen to grapple with their sudden exclusion and the unexpected supervision of the steadfast Miss Garth, who insists on maintaining their usual household routines despite the uncertainty. During a solitary walk, they encounter an enigmatic stranger of striking appearance, Captain Wragge, whose courteous but elusive inquiry leaves Miss Garth perplexed and the sisters none the wiser.
