In which Magdalen, adopting the careful disguise and manner of Miss Garth, undertakes a delicate and secretive visit to Mrs. Lecount’s house with the hope of advancing the cause of the orphaned Misses Vanstone, all the while wrestling with the painful disguise that keeps her sister Norah unknowing. The encounter reveals a housekeeper of agreeable appearance yet ambiguous loyalties, whose conversation and curious domestic aquarium betray more than a little artful control over the admission of their visitor.
