In which Magdalen discovers a secret letter hidden by her somnambulist uncle, Admiral Bartram, setting her on a desperate quest to unveil a vital trust, only to be caught and confronted by the drunken old servant Mazey. She is faced with the bitter necessity of fleeing the house under Mazey’s reluctant protection, wounded by the weight of her recent losses and uncertain what fate now awaits her.
